I've Messed up my Car Stereo trying to remove an old Nokia Handsfree kit

I have a CD6000 (original) Stereo system in my Ford Mondeo. CD had been working fine but no signal on the radio.

I took it out today to check the connection was in place still for the radio.

However, when I took the radio out I decided to remove on old Nokia handsfree kit and all the wiring. But when I put the stereo back in afterwards, all that shows up on the LD screen is "PHONE". I now have no working CD player or radio.

Any ideas what I have done wrong?

Sounds like the aerial is damaged in some way, check the pin in the centre of the elbow isn't damaged (where the aerial plugs into the radio) or that the aerial on the roof isn't bent or broken. Also make sure the cable isn't cut or damaged also, the aerial cable is a core wire surrounded by braided wire outside. If they touch anywhere you'll get no signal at all. Another possibility is that the fm tuner on the radio is gone, see if you can tune in anything on MW/LW.
The other problem is the radios mute circuit is earthed, make sure to remove any loose wires from the back of the radio. On the Nokia kits I think the mute cable was yellow, so a loose yellow wire, or a yellow wire connected to earth is your best bet.
If you are unsure, bring the car to a professional =]

Thanks for that. I took the stereo back out and as connections moved about, CD player started working again. So I thought it might be to do with the pin connection as suggested.

But the CD player kept cutting out to phone. By chance, I removed the smaller of 3 scart type connections to stereo, and hey presto CD player working fine. I can only assume that this scart connection was to do with the Nokia kit I removed.

My radio still wont tune as before, fuzzzes noise on all stations. the roof antenna does have a crack in it from car wash:o which i'll replace. But when i replaced it last time I only had about 70% quality on radio.

I think my bigger problem with the radio might have to do with damp. Rain was leaking through roof. I've fixed the leak but notice the cable from the antenna is very wet? Is the damp likely to mess up radio?

Going to get a dehumidifier to try and remove all dampness from car.

Some cars have an amplifier on the radio antenna: this could be on its way out. You'll probably need to get your hands on a wiring diagram for the car to figure this out properly.

I had same issue with Mazda6 few years ago. Only thing I could do to cure the problem was connecting the little black box back to power and stereo. I didn't connect the cradle back on. The little control unit was behind the glove box in my case.

You might get away with a bit of dampness but if any sort of liquid gets into the radio & does damage you'll be replacing it. Water damage can rarely be repaired.
Did you check if you can pick up anything on LW or MW? FM tuners can go on those radios.

If your radio is black in colour and the model is 6000 then I can say with certainty that the tuner module is faulty and needs to be replaced. The loss of reception is the most common fault with this model and I have repaired it dozens of times.
Re your "PHONE " fault, remove completely the yellow wire from the small middle connector. This was the connection responsible for muting the radio when receiving a call.

Thanks. You seem to have experience with this model. Excuse my ignorance, but when you say the tuner model needs to be replaced, do you mean the whole stereo unit?

ps, i changed the antenna, but the radio still wont tune in any station..just the fuzy noise (CDs play perfectly)

    Check the mute wire.

The tuner module is an internal unit which is solely responsible for all the radio function. When this goes faulty you will loose your FM reception but not always the AM reception. It has no connection to the cd and that is why you still have sound from it.
Because of the age of radio my suggestion to you is locate a similar radio from a breakers yard as this option would be cheaper than having it repaired. If you are anytime near Lughrea feel free to call to my workshop and I will check out radio for you

...When this goes faulty you will lose your FM reception but not always the AM reception...

You can check this by tuning something in on medium or long wave. If you can tune something in on MW or LW your FM tuner is gone.

Can't help you with the phone( possibly resetting with the 4 digit code)

But in regards to the broken radio , it's a common fault on the circuit board with that model from 2000-2004. Do you get signal sometimes and just won't lock on a station and radio keeps fading in and out? Did u also have a dodgy volume control on the unit itself?

Thanks for all the help guys and the offer Iamthemanworks to look at it.

Seem the tuner module is knackered and that is the correct diagnoses. Nothing tunes in on FM or AM. It had been slowly going on and off over the last year. The cheaper option is probably a new stereo, but happy to have the CD playing for now (having exhausted any easy option for the radio). I might be selling the car in the spring so have to weigh up if worth buying new stereo.

One thing I noticed from a quick browse in Halfords is that the typical units now are much slimmer than the CD6000. Presume some sort of cover can be bought to fill up the excess space in I decide to go down that route?
