    hi guys,

Nine lads heading off to Bratislava on a bit of a last minute deal, got really cheap flights. No nothing about the city. Has anyone been? Can anyone recommend a decent hostel or hotel in the city centre close to the night life? Going for two night. anywhere cheap and cheerful but close to the night life would be perfect. Don't mind if we have to go 3 or 4 to a room.

    Cheers

A few friends of mine went before & they didnt find it the friendliest of places. Found the local people fairly rude & ignorant & the nightlife pretty poor especially around this time of year. I guess theres a good reason why those flights are cheap. Should have no problem finding accomodation though, booking.com is a good website for foreign cities. Hope ye have a good time regardless

Budapest on the other hand though is a brilliant city especially for nightlife (according to other friends) & is only a short train journey away from ye

its a bit of a hole to be honest. well it was 5 years ago anyways. The best club is probably circus maximus which is on a barge on the danube.

They're all run by the mafia or so a local told us so dont kick off in the club. on ther other hand there isn't likely to be a row cause the heavys are there.

I've lived here for nearly two years, it's really not a 'hole'.

There's plenty of decent bars / pubs around, and they're open fairly late as well. If you're in to rock music, then Bar Rock is pretty sweet.

It is pretty cold here now, only a couple degrees at night so there won't be as many people out and about at night as there would be in summer.

The locals are friendly enough, unless you're a typical drunk group of lads/ladettes over to stagger around drunk. Learn how to say 'hello' and 'thank you' in Slovak at least and you'll have much nicer experience.

Oh yeah, and don't get a taxi off the street.. you will get ripped off.

We were there 5 yrs ago .
Bratislava is nice . It was not all touristy and yes the locals are not the most friendliest bunch but u know I'd rather that than a pretence . They are not rude either . They were efficient . Better public transport than Ireland . Lovely trams . Old town is the prettiest area but you'll pay more for that .

We stayed at hotel kyjev which looked like something out of a soviet film . There seemed to be a good few men walking around in really long black coats u /KGB style like in tside soviet style films . U felt u had stepped back into a time warp . It is budget and has no frills but the breakfast is decent .one thing though we had no hassle Strange also to see a lada parked in the foyer? Look at trip advisor though it is cheap so does need refurbishment ,

Another lovely hotel was the pyramid it looked cool anyway . It was booked out so could not stay there .
Hotel radisson is right slap bang in the centre .-but would be more expensive .

Food is cheap . Drink too . We did a day trip to Vienna 14 euros return . Got the bus .

Check out the WikiTravel page for Bratislava. http://wikitravel.org/en/Bratislava

I've abandoned Lonely Planet and the like in favour of WikiTravel a long time ago and I've never been disappointed. It covers places to stay, eat and drink and stuff to see as well. Anytime I've been to Slovakia, I found the locals quite nice. Have "Hello" (Ahoj, pronounced Ahoy) and "Thank you" (Ďakujem, pronounced Jack-oo-yem) in the local language in this part of Europe and it makes a massive difference. Just like here in Poland, they don't look too fondly on groups of drunken tourists falling about and roaring and screaming (this is usually why people think they're unfriendly), but they're no prudes either. Just find the happy medium and you'll be grand. :)

I agree lonely planet not that good . I used virtualtourist.com to get all my info and ask questions . At the time we could not find a decent guide book for it . Handy thing about That sight theirs is a trip planner section where u can save both travellor tips etc .

    Enjoy

Maybe the locals should learn how to smile.
Most unfriendliest mafia run kip I've ever been in.
Although I've never been to Moscow.
It's no wonder the Czechs went their own way.

Bratislava is a kip. There's nothing for tourists there. Get on the train to Budapest the minute you land.
