    Hi folks

My sat dish took battering with the weather tonight the arm holding the lnb is not far from snapping off no sat signal being received. Rang sky want to charge 100 euro for replacement.
My question is if I cancel my contract and my fianciee sets up a new account in her surname but same address should I get new equipment free.

yes, and after a few days sky will ring you back and repair for free say you are going to join upc or saorview, when they ring back dont re-sign unless they give you a discount, dish is bout 20 euro. It is 31 days to cancel but they can switch you back on in seconds.

A dish with a quad lnb approx price €30... Time to drive out, take down old one and realign new dish €70....how is that too expensive...people will pay a washing machine repairer €80 just to call out...

he wont need a new lb, i bet bracket is still on wall, it will take 15 mins tops to sort, you cant cancel a washing machine and you dont pay through the nose every month for a washing machine, and its probably the first time he rang sky so they are trying it on. how do i know, they tried it with my neighbour. i then rang on her behalf, she got a new box and a new dish for free and she was so peeved with sky she got a combo box so could ring sky herself to cancel. a few days later they have not stopped ringing her, i think the best offer was 6 months free and 6 months at 15pm. She was with sky for 15 years and had never put in a call. i bet they are gutted now.

U pay for ur mashing machine it last's a number of yrs then u pay to get it fixed, or buy a new one...

U are given equipment when u sign up to sky for free or a small amount. A sky box averages between €200-300 euro plus a dish and the fee they pay to the company who signs u up or the enginner who installs.

it therefore takes sky an average of 2-3 yrs before sky makes any money from a customer and therefore it cannot and shouldn't be expected to give away free dishes constantly for nothing. If it did it wouldn't be in business for very long.

The equivalent is UPC who rent you insuperior equipment which they collect should u cancel your account, after 12 months sky equipment is urs to keep...and if some1 doesnt like the terms then they shouldnt take it in the first place.

€100 is not something I have easily to throw out and this goes for most households nowadays so yes in this current climate it is expensive.
And I am with sky over 10 years only rang them once 4 years ago when moving to new house.

I agree its expensive but as I was trying to explain as an independant installer, it costs me €30 for a dish and if your dish is 10 yrs old the quad will need to be replaced as new dish has a new bar...some lnbs can be retrofitted with a new fitting to take the quad but if its that old highly recommend it changed..

take into that diesel costs, insurance costs......an average of maybe 40euro profit at most from one job if at all..

you are on the wrong planet, a sky box is a glorified db clone, the dear bits are the hdd and power supply, if those boxes were as dear as you think then sky would not be giving them away for free. And sky now make them so they are cheaper still. And believe it or not those boxes are incredibly reliable, the most problems are caused by overheating, customer not giving it enough air circulation And the odd dodgy disc. Some boxes were crap ie am888ds unfortunately. sky has about 10 million customers and the number of boxes failing is minute. Also the number of customers with multiroom and hd is massive. And finally the number of people that phone up sky with a fault and pay the 100 euro call out is unbelievable.

Sky make a fortune so don't shed any tears for them. And if you believe it takes sky 2-3 years to make money from a customer you are very much mistaken.

read this and weep, bear in mind we are in the deepest recession ever!

so get on that phone and demand a free dish and a discount

10 years and one call out, they should be ashamed

check here for 5 dishes, and this was a quick scan, i have got them cheaper, works out at 14.95 each, along way from 30 euro. Now you know why sky are doing so well.

It is you that is sadly mistaken, and it does take sky a considerable ammount of time to make money from every customer hence why they tie u into a 12month minimum contract.

Also the picture you show in the link to ebay isnt even of a zone 2 dish its of a zone1 dish so I wonder if the seller is simply using the wrong picture and as I already stated earlier, the lnb bar is now different and not all lnb's can be retrofitted to fit the new bar..and if an quad was 10yrs old it should be replaced if a new dish is being fitted.

I got of the phone with a sky rep and nothing they can do with the €100 fee.
But when i asked if i can cancel my contract and my partner signs up would she be entitled to a free new box and dish with installation and th rep confirmed she would as the contract is with the person not the household..I am going to go with this route as the €100 will only cover the dish for 90 days warranty were on a new 12 month contract i will get 12 months warranty.

@steveon, when sky gives a customer a free dish do they then ring you and ask you to do the installation for free? Or are you not in the loop, ie they will only give it to an approved sky installer?

I wont argue about making a profit etc

@dooley319, I was rushing last night, I would not tell sky that I was going to cancel etc. BUT I missed out the bit about when you ring you must select the cancel option, anyway it looks as if you will be sorted. And get a brand new install. Check for offers as well.

By the way only one call to them in 10 years I would think they owe you a free dish etc but you have got the best solution. They may still ring you back.

If you can't afford to pay €100 why on earth are you paying Sky a subscription every month that is probably almost half that?

This is crap as well. New goods sold throughout the EC have a two year warranty. It's the law.

I am a sky approved installer, sky use only finlays, or sierra in this country mostly...and most of them are the worst installers I have ever seen, there are an odd good one but most of them dont stick with those companies for long as they workload is ridiculous and hence why there installs are poor as they dont have time to hide dishes, put them up high etc.

When sky give's some1 a free dish, they have to pay whoever has to come out to replace it, usually at a cost of €80-100. Sky do not supply any dishes.

Therefore if they keep giving every1 free dishes they will not be a profit making company which will stop any future developments..and if you cant see that a company is in business to make profits for its shareholders then I dont know what else to say.

Dishes are not usually covered under warrantys as usually its the weather that affects them, mostly the wind which is deemed an act of god...and in salty areas the dishes rot from the salt air...so a fibreglass dish should be used but sky will not supply them unfortunetly.
