Hoof Amputation - Cattle

I have a weanling bull that had one of it's front hooves amputated. So basically it's walking, or trying to walk on one hoof. He got lame overnight and would not put the leg under him. Vet said it had to come off, but 90% of the time the operation is a success.
Anyone ever experience this before? What are my chances of selling him in a mart. Can't see him managing on slats.

I would be wary of slats too but....................I've known ones put on slats some time later and they do okay. It is viewed as a salvage operation, to get the animal by until it can be slaughtered- however, I've known cows to go to the factory 3 years later... due to infertility, not lameness. It takes a long time to heal over and is very painful if touched until then.

we had a cow that had it done on back hoof years and years ago..milking cow at the time, she managed fine i think but it would have been a concrete yard as opposed to slats in those days

Had it done to a cow once she did fine after sold her a year later with culls to a dealer because I didnt think it was fair to have her on slats.

Had it done to a couple of milking cows over the years, works well and we have put them on slats after.

Someone else posted here, but took it down again. I meant to reply to explian that the whole hoof was gone, so a shoe would be of no use. Whoever you were, thanks anyway.

I think it was Black Smoke. ;)
