I am a 21 yo male and always use it, I express my height in metres, weight in kg, distance in km, and speed in kph, etc. Nothing grinds my gears more than a cook book with dual measurements, or my mammy leaving the kitchen balance in the aul measurements, leaving me to change it back. It's been Metric since 1978, why in the fudge are we still lingering onto these antiquated illogical measurements, metric are easy and base 10 ... it's a no-brainer.

and in before the Abe Simpson: "The metric system is the tool of the devil! My car gets 40 rods to the hogshead and that's the way I likes it."

    Absolutely, I use it 60 seconds every minute, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, 365 days a year...oh wait.

    Back in a decade ;)

    All of the above
No, I weigh myself in stone/pounds and height in feet and inches. My mom recently told me she'd lost 'x' kilograms of weight, asked her what that was in pounds, wouldn't have a clue otherwise.

i trhought the answer would be yes, but it seems i only use metric for temperature, and maybe litres of milk, but pints of beer, so wasnt sure which.

    SI units for everything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,910 ✭✭✭OneArt

I only use it with height. I haven't a clue about stones or pounds, or even miles. I don't see the point in the Imperial system. It all just seems to be random sh!t thrown together. Metric is better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

I don't understand people when they give you their weights in kilos, but I use grams and kilos for cooking

I use feet and inches for height

I guess I use it a bit but not when it comes to human measurements.

Work in a lab so use it for everything there: distance, mass, volume etc

Outside of that though I'll use miles and kilometers equally and always express my weight/height in imperial system.

Metric is better but habits die hard.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

You don't have to specify the displacement of the vessel used to contain your beer - barmen just assume you want a pint, unless you have the appearance of a homo about you.

Anyway Ireland wanted to show our "friends" in Europe we were / are strong europeans in the 90s. Thats why we had to get away from the english imperial pun intended system

Yea 12 inches in a foot, three feet in a yard, 220 yards in a furlong, 8 furlongs in a mile.

    It's just.... better isnt it?

I use a mixture of both. I weigh myself in stones and pounds, measure my height in feet and inches, talk about the speed of a car and the distance traveled in a car in mph and miles, use miles per gallon consumption, use gallons for large quantities of liquid and measure tyre pressure in psi.

Being a physicist I use metric for all my work, in cooking, in measuring liquid smaller than a gallon, when talking to people who don't understand imperial etc etc.

Just to answer the OP on WHY people still use imperial; you're 21. You were probably taught the metric system in school. Given that most people live into their 80's, that leaves roughly three quarters of the population having learned the imperial system in school. Most people use it, because its what most of us were taught.

    THATS why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    metric for everything cept beer

why do you still claim 'mileage' but enter kilometre figures?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,293 ✭✭✭1ZRed

I stated all the above but thinking about it I usually say my height in feet, though I'd know what 5'6 up to 6'6 would be in centimetres. I'm metric with my weight and everything else like speed/distance because it's just easier to be accurate.

And as for my dick, well, it's an imperial unit and should be measured as one! :pac:

In our haste to escape British imperialism, we aspire to US statehood instead. The US still use "Merkan" units. We copy all things Merkan, therefore we will (at least) continue as we are and may become even more Merkan than the Merkans themselves. Prepare to buy your spuds in bushels, petrol in US gallons and tenths of a gallon, beer in fluid ounces, milk in quarts and forget all about any unit of weight / mass bigger than a pound.
After that, Merkan spelling and making questions out of statements becomes mandatory. No whut Aw'm sayin'?

As a scientist I have to use the metric system.

    Except for the following
    Volume: Olympic size swimming pools
    Weight: Elephants
    Height: Double-decker buses

I give my height in imperial because I'm around 6ft... if I give a rough figure in cm your guess is as good as mine!
