I wonder what was the main consideration for deciding on Dublin over Shannon?
I know position would be one, but could the fact of a better range of hospital specialists be another?

They have info for diversions to help them choose. So in a medical situation Dublin is best for it's hospitals in their book maybe!

Lufthansa already fly into Dublin and would probably have contacts and a manager etc. there. They possibly brought the 747 pilot over from Germany on one of their scheduled services into Dublin. Shannon for them would be more awkward. Hope the pilot makes a full recovery!

    Hope the F/O is o.k?

The herald seem to be hilariously over hyping this

Off duty non-LH pilot on board as passenger apparently had a hand in the landing due to incapacitated FO.

Brillant...just ignore the aircraft commander being present in the situation...

I can see all the pixel pilots and people like me (interest in aviation, but self loading/loathing cargo) practically salivating at the mouth at a chance to do this!!

    reminds me of this thread!!

And the fact that the guy was a qualified pilot with another airline

I hope the "other" airline is a Star Alliance member for his own sake....

    Best wishes to the F/O.

Excuse my stupidity, but why would that be a factor?

Excuse my stupidity, but why would that be a factor?

Imagine it coming out that an off duty Ryan Air pilot was on an Aer Lingus short haul flight (when they had 737s) and they had to step into the cockpit and help land it.

MOL of course would play it up about Ryan Air rescuing the competition, but he might also ask why was the guy on an Aer Lingus flight when Ryan Air flew to within 100 miles of the Aer Lingus destination. :)

I am not allowed discuss …

I heard MOL recently admit that he fly's BA to Heathrow!

Here's another link to the same story, hyped headlines

So you're just talking from a PR field day type of thing rather than any sanctions he could face. That's ok. That much I can understand.

I picked up Brandon's post as saying he could face disciplinary action from his own employers.

He probably gets discounts/preference when flying within the Alliance airlines

I guess my original post was to poke fun in a PR style exactly like the M'OL type post above. I'm sure he won't face disciplinary action but his employers will be wondering why he was on a flight with another airline if they serve/codeshare or have an alliance that flies the same route.

Because every security angle is breached. All company ops manuals forbid non employes in cockpit.....irrespective of situation.

Skipper could end up in a world of manure over this ......

I honestly thought all transatlantic had 3 operators up front...learn something new everyday I guess.

Awful failure there but at least they added this bit of factual info "Ms Gorner said the off-duty pilot.........provided the captain with ‘additional back-up’ to land.....

........if the off-duty pilot had not been on board as a passenger, a senior cabin crew member would have been able to provide the same assistance required to land the Boeing 747.

The captain had 'full charge of the aircraft into Dublin......"

    On the point about travelling on the competition;
MoL can't give off to his pilots... 1) they are most probably Brookfield employees, 2)He very recently travelled to the US in Business class himself.

It's a great outcome to a potentially nasty situation.

p.s. A mate of mine was actually in a similar situation some time ago, but his offer of help was declined. He had no idea why. Here's a picture of him...;)

I know you are joking but I'm pretty sure everyone has bought products or services from their employers competitors at some point (assuming their company supplies to consumers).

Haha, I have to admit I was curious myself how he approved he was an off duty pilot, he could just as easily have been an on opportunist suicide bomber/terrorist. :D. Perhaps he had his Id.

Yeah but would he have been caught on an EI flight before his company owned a big stake in them ?
It would have been a bad PR move.

I don't think the pilots airline is quiet the USAF where people who step out of line find themselves operating out of Alaska.

MoL travelled quite a bit with EI in the early 2000's when going to fight the EU in Brussells, obviously BVA wasn't too close for road transfer to the European Commission offices

As for the off duty pilot, you will find that all airline crew carry their ID with them when travelling. A) to prove training if called to to assist if required, B)as a form of ID if travelling on staff tickets, and C) to get staff discount in airport shops.
