Broken ribs are bloody sore but would not nessecarily stop you cycling.

broken ribs wouldn't stop you riding, your upper body is relatively stationary on a bike.

Sneezing is a ****er mind, so you don't wanna catch a cold.

Is this one of the side effects of EPO:D
No, it's the side effect of someone with some cojones. Other than a couple of fingers, ribs are the only things I've broken and the worst part I found was sleeping, really deep breathing was a bitch too, but oul Brad would be easy breathing at a point where I'd need an effin iron lung so... I found ripping the intercostal muscles in the rib area was actually worse in a lot of ways. Breathing, just sitting on my hole was way worse and I am a Yellow Jersey and World Champion 20 times winner of the sitting on my hole race.

*Aside* one thing that does piss me right off about the "drug talk" and yes this includes Arsestrong, is that unless they're huffing morphine as a side order, pain is the one thing that all of the pro peloton are well used to and work through regardless.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

i know he's wrapped up , but anyone else thinks he looks like there is a bit more of him there? like he's added a few pounds in the off season? nothing wrong with it, just hope for us all if that's the case

Yes, he looks fatter, but he used to be around 80kg as a track rider.

This does somewhat put a dent in the "95% all year round" idea he was describing last year.

Didn't it turn out that he only bruised them (not that that's to be sniffed at either)?

He is exactly the same height as me and slightly heavier than me.

Oh to be a TDF winner and be able to get bib tights that fit. :(:(

It's the dislocated finger I'd be more concerned about, though if it was the pinkie or the ring finger you'd get away with it.

Bruised/cracked ribs are a complete bitch. One of the most irritating injuries because it only has two levels of pain - none or excrutiating. And the latter happens suddenly when you make any weird movement. As Wibbs says, sleeping is the sorest part (actually sleeping is fine, it's waking up that's the killer), the pain subsides during the day.

Cycling is actually fine, except for starting or stopping the bike. So commuting is out, but a couple of hours spin on a country road would be fine.

No, no, no... not the waking up... its the getting out of the bed. About a fifteen minute process as you inch over to the side and then try to figure out how to twist your body to get your legs out over the edge and on to the ground.

I've played football matches a couple of weeks after broken ribs, and also 5 days after broken/dislocated fingers, so I'm guessing someone who's as dedicated to something where they're one of the best in the world, it's no big deal getting back in the saddle after a little tip!

Even footballers, no way! I've seen the level of pain these guy express and to play football WITH broken ribs must be stuff of folklore.

Just because they go down easy doesn't mean they're any less tough. Perhaps more so as their sport has the highest participation so is hardest to reach the elite level.

I came off a mountain bike and dislocated a finger - attempted to relocate it myself and rode home before heading to the hospital .. There was no support car tailing me neither ..

As a kid a team mate of mine broke his shoulder somehow during a rugby match. He was IMHO a lazy sod who never tried particularly hard. He played in the second row.

Fair play to him he played the rest of the game. When he broke the shoulder he complained that he was sore. As he was an ineffectual second row I thought this was an excuse not to pack down properly at scrum time, bind and push as necessary.
After remonstrating with him he tried to push. I was still not impressed.
I was captain and hooker, so at line out time I insisted calling even lineout on him. He couldn't raise his arm at all so had less chance than usual of taking a ball in the air.

Afterwards I found out that he was brought to hospital with the shoulder injury. He did play an entire match with that shoulder.

(I dont recall him ever playing again however).

Would they not be allowed to use certain pain killers outside of race season?

Pain killers are OK as long they are not on the banned substances list. Out of competition tests are also conducted in the off season.

Very few painkillers are on the banned list these days. I'm not aware of any commonly used ones which are still banned (though I've not read the 2013 list fully yet)

My uncle was a jockey in the 70s and often raced with broken ribs. Said it was pretty difficult but he just had to get on with it.

The likes of Wiggins would be as hard as nails and well able for it. (Chuck Norris tough!)
