Never really expected to be posting this, but Aldi are stocking a Cru Classe wine fom Thursday. It may "only" be a 5th Growth and a 2007, but I think this is the first time I've come across classified wine in an Irish supermarket. That it's from the Lynch stable should ensure it sells well too. Selling at €28 which ain't bad I reckon.

In Burgundy (The region the vinyard, Château Lynch-Moussas, is in) the classification Grand Cru means that the Vineyard can potentially produced grapes of the very highest quality and is capable of producing top class wine. Basically, the land is perfect for wine grape growth.

Chateau Lynch-Moussas labled wine is the best wine they produce and it's a pretty good wine.

Usually available in France or the UK for about €21-28 per bottle, so €28 in Ireland is a pretty good price.

Apparently their 2005, if you can get it, is spectacular.

They would be very different wines, and I've never had the Toro Loco, but Tempraillo grapes are the main grape in Rioja wines so if you like rioja, I'd imagine you'd like the Toro Loco.

Is it available in Irish Aldi's?

I'll be grabbing one of those so and giving it a blast next weekend with one of their select dry aged steaks.

I have to say, if you go into most independent wine shops you shoudl be able to pick up a Grand Cru Classe, with provenance, for €20 - €30. You'd probably even have a choice of them.

Looks like Aldi are doing it again - this Christmas they're stocking the Fourth Growth Chateau Marquis de Terme (2008), Margaux AOC. Price an excellent €30. I guess stocking premium wines seems to be doing well for Aldi - the Lynch Moussas mentioned above seems to be in their permanent range now. Great to have wines like this available at decent prices.

    Not in my experience.

Good time of year to be doing it, people will be willing to splash out to get a bottle for Christmas.

They've a swanky looking 30 year old port in the UK Aldi as well. A great price given that it comes in a decanter. https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/product-range/exclusive-to-aldi/christmas/christmas-drinks/product-detail/ps/p/maynards-30-year-old-tawny-port/

    Not in my experience.

Nonetheless they are there.... in my defence I'm looking at a 2008 Margeaux for €30.50 right now (and that's post recent excise increase).

The Des Graviers? That's not a Cru Classe (or even Cru Bourgeois). As I'm sure you know, a wine being Cru Classe makes a big difference to its perceived prestige* - and price. €30 for the Fourth Growth Margaux and €28 for the Lynch Moussas is excellent value and I have not seen prices like this for Cru Classe wines in indie wine shops (although I haven't exactly conducted an exhaustive survey - and of course many/most indie shops don't sell Classe wines anyway). At the time of my original post last year, the best comparison was the 2008 Lynch Moussas that Bubble Brothers were selling at €42, compared to Aldi's 2007 at €28 - 33% cheaper; BB have since reduced to €36 (due to Aldi's price?). Lest I be misinterpreted, I am not attacking indie wine shops here - even a small one has far more wine of interest than most supermarkets. Aldi and Lidl are the only supermarkets worth bothering for decent wine in my experience. Tesco is an embarrassment these days - aisles full of overpriced dull wine. While their 'buy 6, get 25% off' promotions used to be great, I haven't even managed to find 6 bottles worth buying in there to get the discount in the last year or so!

    * now, whether the Crus Classe are really worthy of their perceived status in comparison to 'lesser' wines is a different matter!

Well that is the difference. Our wines are selected on taste and not on perceived status and margins. Ours is a Cru Artisan and I sell it with confidence! :D
