Invited to Masquerade Ball- need your help1

So.. major, major stress at the mo! I got invited to a masquerade ball and I'd like to follow-through and go if I can at all. My main problem is that I have nothing I'd like to wear. I do have a few dresses but they're not suited to this type of thing as they are either too casual or too dressy/bridesmaidy. Others are wearing short dresses and so it's not going to be over the top dressy or anything but people will be making an effort.

Does anyone have any advice for me? I'm also on the petite side of things but average enough height- just not very tall- just in case that helps.

If I did go down a short black dress route what could I do to dress it up a bit?

Appreciate any ideas at all. Red is another good colour for me and I'm open to ideas other than black dress. Don't think I'll bother with a mask and might just get my eye makeup done professionally.

Why not? Isn't that the whole point of a masquerade ball? Plus that will allow you to wear a plain black dress as it will be accessorised or dressed up by the mask.
