    Set for release in 2015.

    Predecessor was released in 1983.

It would also be very profitable for Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford to all make a return.

    Discuss.

I hope they do, but there's no guarantee.

It wont be up to them.
It will be up to the studio, writers, director if they want them back. I doubt they will.

I think most people will be cautious and wary of getting disappointed. While I am confident that Disney can revive the franchise, I won't be getting too built up about it until at lot closer to the release.

why would it be, why would they get paid hugh money to return, star wars has a massive universe of hundreds of worlds and thousands of characters, im sure theyll be offered roles at a fair wage, but i doubt theyll have any grounds for holding the production to ransom, any roles theyll have will be minor anyway, maybe luke in charge of the jedi academy, and leah some kind of senator/queen with hans doing whatever the **** a retired smuggler does after he marries a princess,

and also it hasnt been anticipated that long, all the anticipation was used up by the 3 prequels, and now all that is left is the dread of these films falling flat on their faces

I think that's highly unlikely, unless they're playing minor, supporting roles. Kids wanna see young sexy people kicking ass, not a load of grandparents in their 70s hobbling around trying to relive the glory days.

After the disappointing load of old arse that was the prequel trilogy, I think that cautious curiosity is a more likely reaction from most people.

if turkey neck Lucas had minimal contact with all stages of production it might succeed with a good director

Speaking of that, I for one would love Joss Whedon to direct it

Yes? No? Not sure how we can seriously answer that question considering the movie only exists as a press release at the moment.

Besides, I'm pretty sure Phantom Menace in 1999 had a lot of people excited & we all know how that went. If anything I imagine most people are just sitting tight until they know more about the film - only the most apologetic of fanboys / girls are going to be that abuzz with excitement.

I wouldnt mind seeing Hamill back playing an older, Luke, not so much Han and Leia though, makes sense in Lukes case going full circle to Jedi master. Dont really want to see an old Han Solo making jokes about being old ala Crystal Skull. Leia coud be a senator or ambassador or something I guess. or it could involve Han and Leia's kids, who would need to be adults anyway.

Episode 1 was a phenomenon - the trailer release if I recall correctly was one of the first viral Internet videos. Perhaps everything is exaggerated since I was still a schoolkid at the time, but I remember the Star Wars exhibition they had in the RDS before release - the place was abuzz with excitement and had a huge turnout. The toy shops were full of Star Wars figures, the whole lead up to release was building to a genuine, perhaps unrepeatable event (especially for those of us young enough to have gotten entirely caught up in the hype).

Then the prequels actually happened, which will inevitably dampen enthusiasm for whatever comes next. Still, there's few if any franchises that can attract the same rapid attention as Star Wars, and with Lucas swearing off involvement, there's no doubt many a fan will be eagerly anticipating release day in 2015 even with suitably lowered expectations.

I remember the summer of 99 like it was yesterday, was a great summer movie season, it was all Episode 1 hype then along came The Matrix and took everyone by surprise.

Episode I was the most anticipated film of all time : 16 years of hype, rabid mass fan support and optimism at fever-pitch. Despite it being, well let's say a mixed bag at best, including the 3D re-release it banked over a BILLION dollars. I don't think anything will be as big as the hype for this release and also the biggest case of blue-b*lls in cinematic history.

It also included the cure for that, in Jar Jar

SW7 will never match the hype of Ep1. I'm guessing no film ever (or at least in our lifetimes) will match the hype of Ep1.

It was just a unique combination of factors : the massive 16 year wait, the fact that three existing movies were all pretty great and also then of course the whole childhood tie-in experience. Not many movies could even offer that combination of factors.

Now even Star Wars itself can't regain that buzz thanks to the prequels (and that's probably a good thing tbh as it means we won't be expecting too much from the new movie and may be pleasantly surprised this time).

Star Wars is, by far, my most beloved franchise. Given what we received with the prequel trilogy, and, as watchable as they were, even impressive at times, it's incredibly unlikely a new trilogy could be inferior, and as such, I heartily embrace the new direction it will take and will remain optimistic until launch day, with good reason. Surprised more Star Wars fans don't feel the same; this is THE second chance the franchise has been both waiting for and deserves.
