BOARDS GROUP BUY:Wheels.Yishun ALLOY Deep Section

    Just wondering would there be any interest in getting a 'group buy' together after Xmas for wheels from the wheel manufacturer 'Yishun'. On other cycling forums Yishun go out of there way to point out that they are not the 'other' carbon producers.How much of that you believe is up you!!!!!!
    Any pprendille who posts here the odd time
    forwarded me an email he got from yishun as they have started to sell
    deep-ish section wheels in ALLOY.They come in 27mm and 40mm
    I emailed Sandy in Yishun asking about prices and he\she told got back with US$299 for the 27mm and US$339 for the 40mm plus 3% PayPal fee.That price includes shipping.
    Pretty sure if there are enough people are interested we can get a fairly decent discount. I have asked Yishun about a group order discount and they have said yes it's possible. Wont know the discount we can get until quantity is confirmed.
    Am posting from the fone and have no idea how to attach pics but will post when I get to a pc but may as well get the thread any potential interest going.

    Don't forget your customs duty and VAT (I presume they would be coming from outside the EU);)

    Couldn't forget that now if they are coming form outside the eu. But there may be a legal way around that.

    These are 30mm alloy wheels from Planet X. How would the Yishun wheels compare with them for quality and weight?

    Possibly interested in this. Those 40mm look da bomb. Can confirm Yishun are reliable to deal with and are good quality.

    The only "legal" way is to import via another EU/EEA country, and you then have to pay the duties/VAT on import into whichever country you choose from wherever they are manufactured

    Better option? http://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;navigation=1;menu=1000,4,123,30;product=41091 By time you pay duty etc these may work out just as cheap and reputable manufacturer. Not trying to knock your suggestion bcmf but always worth looking at alternatives.

    yishun have a rep in Italy who deals with European orders but will have to see as the weeks go on how exactly that pans out.
    That's the point - he will have to account for Duties when he brings them into the EU and charge you VAT (probably Italian VAT at 22% I believe) on the sale to you

    Ok so I emailed Yishun looking for a sample discount price for 10 sets of the 40mm wheel and they came back with this reply.

    "40mm clincher alloy wheels were our new wheels in April this year.
    Have sold out nearly 400pairs till now, feedback has been very good.
    Customers who need a strong but economical wheelset, our AL40C is a good choice.
    If take 10sets one time, the best price is USD249/pair, this is very special offer.
    Free Ti skewers+spare spokes+spare nipples+rim tapes are included."

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,679 ✭✭✭bcmf

    I then asked about shipping and comparing shipping all in one carton and 10 seperate cartons to 10 different address's and got this back

    "About the shipping, the best price is as below(one pair wheels in one carton) :
    1),If ship to same address, shipping is USD1,050 totally, USD105/carton on average, by DHL;
    if use EMS, shipping is around USD140/carton, and EMS is slower;

    2), If ship to different addresses in Ireland, shipping is USD1,300 totally, USD130/carton on average, by DHL;
    if use EMS, shipping is around USD175/carton, and much slower.

    Price for 10pairs wheelsets are USD249/pair*10pairs=USD2,490.
    Wheels will be packed into 10 cartons, we are now using new and upgraded carton packages.
    To protect the wheels better during long way shipment, and make sure customers receive new&complete wheels.'

    Now maths was never my strong point but is it me or is buying in 'bulk' working out more expensive then buying as a single item <snip>

    I have two pairs of kinlin alloy wheels. They are very solid wheels. If you want to compare this offer, you should take a look at Wheelsmith. The IRD Aero are Kinlin 30mm rims.

    What does a pair of these wheels weigh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,931 ✭✭✭letape

    They weigh 1710 grams +/1 30 grams. See details below:

    http://www.yishunbike.com/2012-yishunbike-40mm-clincher-alloy-wheels-p-649.html

    Effectively they weigh the same as the Fulcrum wheels included in an earlier post, and they seem to cost approx the same, depending where shipping ends up.

    Further to the mention of Wheelsmith above, the wesbite has some good info on the individual rims, hubs, and spokes, but I don't find it very easy to find on their site each time I go back. For those as challenged as me, the clincher rim info is here and this is what it says about the IRD rims, which might be useful if they are the same as the Kinlin rims:
    We've been using Interloc Racing Design Niobium clincher rims for a few years now. We only have the 30mm Cadence Aero now and the 27mm Niobium rims. The 30mm rim is available 20h to 32h drillings (460g) for a deeper section, lower spoke wheel. These are excellent for time-trialling, cyclo-cross, criteriums, general road racing and training, being incredibly strong and remaining stiff even with less spokes. They do offer a bit of aero lift at higher speeds and can be built down to about 1300g with Extralite hubs. The 27mm rims are 440g, sometimes less.

    Separately, and without wishing to derail the thread, I second the suggestion of considering Wheelsmith. I've only used them once (just over a month ago) but found them very good to deal with and the wheelset they built, which is being used regularly by my wife to tow our child trailer, has so far proved to be very good. They might or might not compete with the Yishun option on purchase price, but their delivery charges should be lower and based on my (admittedly limited) experience of Wheelsmith I'd have faith in their workmanship. Plus they are relatively close which helps if anything goes wrong that would require a wheel(set) to be returned.

    What is the 'selling point' for these wheels compared to more locally available options?

    I guess they are 'all round' (pun not intended :)) wheels rather than for TTs, climbing ir any specific application (maybe the 40mm rims are particularly 'aero' for TTs?), but they dont seem especially light, especially cheap (when you add shipping they come to $500 or so) or have any real uniqueness from my reading.

    Sorry for being a skeptic..........perhaps I'm missing something but what differs these from a pair of Ultegra's, Zonda's or RS80s, all of which are there or thereabouts the same price, available much more locally?

    Doubt the yishun have spokes as good as Zonda's "spokes are provided with the new Campagnolo anti-rotation system that ensures ideal aerodynamic penetration at all times" :rolleyes:

    Had a quick txt chat with pprenderville and there maybe something lost in the translation as it seems it a bit mad that a group/bulk buy is working out more expensive per unit then a single purchase.
    I will clarify this with them.

    aka "glue" or, simply, "round spokes" :)

    OK. I got clarification regarding price-ing.

    " I have just tried to talk with manager to get a better quote if you order 10sets.
    He finally agreed USD249+USD90DHL shipping=USD339/pair, without paypal fees. That is really a very very special offer now!
    Total would be USD339*10=USD3,390, incl. free Ti skewers+spare spokes+spare nipples+rim tapes(red color).
    If use paypal, there is 3% fees USD101.7, but we suggest customers use bank transfer, to reduce much transaction fees."

    Will Post pics in a bit.I stressed it would be after xmas but they seem keen to deal.
    Remember this is posted to one address and will be subject to import duties etc.
    Bank Transfer is not an option as at least you have your arse covered with paypal.

    +1 . Get set of Zondas for around €380.Great solid wheel.I brought some stuff from America recently to the value of around $1200 and got caught for over €230 custom duty.Puts a right dampner on it.You mightn't get a discount but if bought say at Rose you would save on shipping as shipping is €8 regardless of how many items.
