Get a 1.6 Primera, old model pre-2002, can be got for buttons, drive nicely, spares are cheap and they are tough as old boots. Spend the other €400 on a full service and some tyres when they are needed. Chain not a belt so no cost there and they go on and on and on.:)

Don't get fixated on the relatively slightly higher tax on a 1.6 than a 1.3 - calculate it on a per day basis and you will see how insignificant it really is.

And the more it costs to tax the cheaper it is to buy in this country.

Mitsi Lancer too, or a carisma, could get a very decent one for under a grand.

Carina will have 999,000 miles up by now and only be getting sold as it's shagged, Astra is a good car but not japscrap tough(though I put 295000miles on one so they're not bad...) but for cheap toughness, the Primera is very overlooked. Mines an 01 but it's still the older model. The new models are utter pants. Mine has 146k miles up and drives very tight and looks clean..

There a tough enough car. Check the usuals, also ive seen a couple of them well rusty underneath and back of sills.

A nearly 17 year old car's reliability cannot be defined by brand reputation, it depends on the car itself and how it has been looked after. The most reliable type car like an Almera can be a complete ball of ****e if it has been abused or poorly maintained.

That model Almera is a very reliable and cheap car to run, I bought one last year from my brother in law who owned it from 1 year old. It's a 99 saloon, had 116k on it when I bought it, she now has 119k  Needless to say I don't do much mileage, but they are a very solid car (If of course it's been looked after and not abused).
