    Hi.

I bought a laptop recently (under a bit of pressure as prev machine crashed and died).
The spec I bought was 320GB HDD and 6GB RAM. OS is Win 7.
Having gone through the machines own system summary, it tells me its a 2GB RAM with 1.6GB available.
Receipt/Shop bar code sticker on box says 6GB RAM.

So am I missing something ? Genuine mistake/shop taking the pi**.
Basically I'm asking confirmation of- if the system summary says its 2GB RAM, then its 2GB and there isn't 4GB's hanging around somewhere else ?

I just thought I'd run it by here before going into shop with all guns blazing.
Major computer mfgr and large shop chain.

    Thanks.

Check the bios and see how much memory it reports in there.

It could be that the RAM isn't seated properly or something. Tbh, if you bought it in a shop I'd go back to them before opening it.

    Thanks folks.

Looks like I'll be taking a trip to the shop tomorrow.

Could be tricky though. Are they likely to suggest modding the machine to upgrade its memory ? Don't think I'd be too happy about that and they won't be happy about me shoving their machine back at them in a used state. I presume they can reset it to factory and sell it as a demo. Only a few days old though.

Did you run cpuid, if so how much memory showed up?

Sale of goods and supply of services act 1979. Product not as described.. Entitled to a full refund. It's up to you of you want to take store credit or replacement

Doesn't matter if its faulty they have the obligation to refund you..

That is really weird that the box and receipt would say 2 gig ram, then there being only 2 gigs. Never heard of that before :S strange

I'd imagine a machine coming with 6GB would have two sticks, one 2GB and one 4GB, could be the case that the 4GB stick is there but isn't seated properly.

That seems like the problem but by removing it you can void the warranty so better to bring it back especially if it's only a few days old

    All is well:)

No major probs encountered. Wrong machine picked (well, it was a sunday) in stores.
Managed to get a much higher spec'd machine for a few quid more, so a result all round. PITA setting up another new unit but I suppose it cudda been worse.

    Thanks again.
