Getting a profile and exhibition

A friend is trying to have a exhibition of his painting in a Dublin gallery or possibly have a review of his work done in an Irish magazine or paper.

He has been approaching individual galleries and was wondering what other methods he could use to get his work viewed by people who could further his profile.

    All advice appreciated. Thanks.

I used to hire a function room in a hotel for a weekend once a year to show my artwork. I usually did a deal with the hotel where I could bring my own wine, they would charge a corking fee, and I would take total responsibility for the artwork and room. Send out an invite to everyone I could possibly think of,

try and time it with a weekend where there will be a lot of activity in a hotel, eg. rugby international, golf championship, Volvo yacht race, so you will capture some passing trade. Have prints of your work at hand for people who may not be able to purchase originals.

I found the advantage of doing this was avoiding having to pay the 40%+ commission some galleries were charging. A couple of hundred quid paid for the hotel room. You also have the advantage of your work being open to the public late into the evening and also on the Sunday.
