CE Scheme & State Benefits

Just wondering if anyone can help. Quick outline - I'm on CE Scheme, have 2 young kids, Husband being made redundant this week and actively looking for re-employment but no joy yet. Typical situation of large mortgage, childcare costs etc.

My query is, should he have difficulty finding employment, would we actually be financially better off if I left CE Scheme so he could claim full dependant rate for me and our 2 kids? Also, are we entitled to medical card, FIS, fuel allowance or anything? Don't want to freeload from state but husband has worked for 23 years without any claim for anything and we'll take all the help we can get until he gets back on the work ladder again. Have received conflicting advice from Citizens Information and Social Welfare office. If anyone knows what we can expect financially it would be great. At the moment, my CE salary is taxed due to him working but I presume this will change once he's out of work? His redundancy doesn't take him over the tax threshold as he's only in current job 7 years.

Apply Monday for a medical card. Do it online, you have a good chance, if you have no wads of cash under the mattress.

I dont think you would be better off if you left the CE scheme.

What ever you earn is means tested against the rate he will get.

They dont just minus your pay from his payment though.

eg, If his full payment is €371, and you earn about €287 per week, he will get about €227.

You wont get fuel allowance, there has to be no one working in the house and on a payment for a year.

I'm not sure about mortgage interest relief, but you apply to your CWO. Approach you bank for a payment holiday if you can.
