    Hey,

Im wondering if someone could help me. Was driving down Naas Rd this evening and spotted a Garda van parked up on the path. I was doing 70-80kph in a 60kph zone. There a was a flash from the van when I got close. Im assuming once there's a flash then youve definitely been caught or might I be lucky?

    Thanks :-)

You may not have been going quite as fast as you think but yeah, it sounds like you were caught alright. Expect notice in the next few weeks (in theory could take up to six months), of an €80 fine and 2 points which will last for two years...not the end of the world. Just be careful not to add to them and it won't have any effect on you.

I know the feeling, but you've only yourself to blame. :p

Anyways, many a time I've passed one of those vans and expected the notice to come and it never did. So all hope is not lost. :)

The points will last three years unfortunately

You don't have points until the RSA tells you that you have points.

    D'oh! Sorry, I knew that, don't know why I said two. :o

At least our system isn't like Germany's. Once the three years is up, those two points are gone, even if you've added others to your licence in the meantime.

In Germany, you could be a month away from having your points removed when you get another ticket and then you'll have all the points for a full three years. :(

Points only go on your license 28 days after you get the fixed charge letter, RSA send another letter to tell you when they're active. Passed one of the garda speed camera vans last week, no visible reflection, parked at the bottom of a hill right at an exit of the dual carriageway in the pouring rain, could imagine someone going straight up the back of them, ridiculous place to park IMO.

Harsh. But I suppose their logic is that if you are on probation and you reoffend, you get into bigger trouble.
