And the part where in addition to the purchase price, you also have to supply an ATV2 or another £50. Even when you do, you get nothing in return until after ATV3 can be jailbroken.

Normal allows you access to a limited range of applications chosen by Apple.
Apart from playing iTunes content, the other main app is Netflix.

If you jailbreak, you can install XBMC and play content from your own network storage, without iTunes etc. There are other apps/plug-ins that you can add to enhance the flexibility of the media playing power of the ATV.

I laughed too. Holey bajesus why not just buy one yourself now and use it until the jailbreak comes out. (if it does ever materialize)
