I am thinking of upgrading my tv after christmas. I currently have a 32 inch LG lcd tv. Its great but lately i am thinking of getting a 42 inch or 50 inch tv.

I play a lot of games on my PS3 and watch netflix and occasionally watch tv shows from my media player. I am not sure if i should go for a 3D tv or a smart tv

What do you guys think about it? IS going for a 3d tv worth it? then again is the smart tv really worth it? I know you can watch youtube videos on it but is there any other advantage with smart tv?

Note: i dont know much about this new smart tvs except that they have internet and are extremely thin.

One more thing, i found the 3d plasma tvs very cheap however a friend of mine said that its not very good compared to the LED ones. Is that true?

    Cheers

I just picked up a Samsung E series 3d and smart tv today and TBH both are just fads. Every other browser you already use will be better by miles and 3d is a nice novelty but thats all it is.

I'd pick a TV with good sound, clarity, resolution, contrast and motion over 3d or smart any day. Their added features thats all, make sure the main function of the TV... ya know - watching tv shows, movies and gaming - are top class first is my advice.

I picked up a Smart tv for my bedroom and it is far from a gimmick. I use it for Netflix(has a built in app) and also access all the media I have on my Mac downstairs. I can stream all my movies and tv shows flawlessly without any external boxes.

By the sounds of your OP a Smart tv may be of interest to you.

The thing about 3D is that in many cases the TV is all the better for having 3D because the picture quality had to be improved to cope and compensate for the glasses etc. It's a bit gimmicky alright, but usually for a given brand of TV the 3D ones are usually further up the ranks, meaning that if you go for one of the better ones it'll probably come with 3D anyway.
Smart features are handy, but if you have the PS3 then that can do plenty of multimedia stuff.
Plasma's are still the best for 3D because they have the least crosstalk, Panasonic ones are excellent. They're cheaper mainly because people have notions like your mate, so happy days really!

More than likely a new 3D TV will be smartTV, beware on what sites/ APS are available. Make sure Netflcks is actually on it & available in Ireland, Some manufactures have a claus, like will work, but content not available in your country.

No experience on 3d TV gaming but gaming on a 3D Monitor is interesting, and a fration of the cost of a 3DTV, and can be connected to a smart box like Apple TV (which has netflicks) or satbox. One drawback is not 50in.
