Do I need a TV licence if I can't receive television? I dont have Saorview ? My TV simply doe NOT receive any signal, its in the kitchen and i use it for the dvd player only. again THERE IS NO SIGNAL and the tv

as far as wiki says: Television (TV) is a telecommunication medium for transmitting and receiving moving images that can be monochrome (black-and-white) or colored, with or without accompanying sound. "Television" may also refer specifically to a television set, television programming, or television transmission.

My TV does not receive or transmit anything any more

Yeah there is a TV in our house but we don't have a license either haha. We keep the curtains closed so you can't see it from outside, if an inspector comes around tell him you don't have a TV. Problem solved.

The law says you need a licence. Sell your TV on ebay and buy a monitor. That will cost less than an ongoing licence.

So you do watch Irish TV. And you certainly watch TV.

You are quite content to steal from your fellow taxpayers? You are no better than a bank robber.

Nope. We've been going for 3 years now with no license. Why would I pay a ridiculous tax whos sole purpose is to line the pockets of tubridy and all the other degenerates in RTE when I never watch any of the crap that they put out every week? And don't say "because its the law", I don't care, if I'm extremely unlikely to get caught then I'm happy to ignore it.

You do realise that they don't need to actually see your TV to know that you have one?

What you do is your decision. You shouldn't be advocating breaking the law here though.

There have been multiple threads on this website about TV licenses where multiple people have said they have never had one. I have yet to hear of any of them getting dragged in front of a judge because of it.

The TV Licence is a licence to own a television receiver. It does not grant you the right to watch Irish TV. And you don't pay your way so what else should you be called? I'd call you a thief to be honest.

Well less likely in an apartment block to be honest, but if you subscribe to SKY they send your details on to the television commission etc.

Surely the data protection act prohibits this?

So you pay the UK Licence do you?

The sooner we get a universal charge to cover this licence the sooner those who do not pay their share will be forced to pay.

Do wonder if, with all the dodgers then having to pay, if the fee could be reduced ..... that would be something! :D

Really? well then surely it was reported in the media since it was the first time a minor offender was tracked via IP to his actual address, found to not have a TV license, brought to court and convicted from posting this website. Please provide proof of this as I simply don't believe you.

It takes a lot of time and effort for the gardai to track people to their home address that way and I highly doubt they would bother just to get some guy for not paying his TV license. Can you tell me which boards.ie poster it was so I can talk to him about it?

We're not subscribed to sky or anything like that. I think there are some clauses in the data protection act in relation to serious offenders like people downloading child porn etc. But not for people dodging a bit of tax. No way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 253 ✭✭Super hoop

Last time i checked,tv licence was NOT a tax!!!!
I hate paying motor tax,but i do because i use em.

You're right and I didn't think of that - it is something I heard. Perhaps it is that SKY informs them that a new account was set up in address.

Not paying your TV license is a minor offence. You said a friend of yours who posts on boards was brought to court for not paying his TV license, was he caught because he posted it on boards? That is what you said.

No I didn't - I guess this is what you understood. I said my friend was sent to court and was fined for not having a TV licence. Also, minor offender doesn't mean what you think it means.

I'll repeat myself in case you didn't understand my post.

The TV licence is a licence to own a TV. That's it. It is not a charge for RTE TV even though the bulk of the money raised pays for RTE.

If you own a TV and only use it to watch Sky Sports or UTV you need a TV licence. If you deliberately evade your licence you are committing an offence. In my opinion you are a thief. Simple.

I understood you earlier post.as the licence is used to fund rte(a service i don't use).i choose not to buy a licence.

The TV licence also partly funds TG4, TV3 and very strangely and total misuse, Setanta.

People can choose not to do things. Like buy car insurance. But it's criminal if you have a Car on the Road.

If you don't like laws, then lobby to change them. But Breaking them is criminal. It's often indirectly damaging everyone else and thus immoral too.

I had a subscription with Chorus years ago and within weeks the TV license letter had my name on it !!

There was something in the media about this back around 03/04 I wouldn't say it was true unless I was certain..

If you are certain then you kinda need to be able to prove it. I can give you anecdotal evidence of people with a sky subscription for years who never received anything about a tv license.

In the UK, people selling TVs and TV services certainly had to notify the Licence people in the past. Don't know if it's true now. Anyway such legislation can be exempt from normal Data Protection rules.

Here they just assume everyone has a receiving apparatus unless they prove they have not.

People that watch live TV by any method from ANY channel without a TV licence are selfish parasitical criminals that the rest of us are paying for.

BTW, a court order can be got to identify time an IP of someone breaking the law (and encouraging breaking of some laws can be a crime too), then a court order with ISP to identify household or Mobile using that IP. I have physically seen such court orders, they are real.

Phones are exempt. It's one licence per premises. Always has been. If a bed sit has its own kitchen it's counted as separate. A Portable TV is covered by premises licence if it's not used on mains elsewhere. A mounted Mobile home or Holiday cottage is a separate premise.

The laws are quite clear on this.
