    Hi all ive a mate who is looking to replace his broken Dell laptop.

    He has a budget of around €500.

    He ideally wants a 17 inch screen

    Decent processor and hard drive. {SSD not important}

    Graphics card not important

    Most importantly it need to be a durable hard wearing laptop

    What would you recommend?

    The smaller the more durable. Rule of thumb is to go under 2Kg in weight.
    11.6" are very sturdy and you can throw them around but I'm afraid there is no decent spec for €500 so look for 13.3" or max 14".

    Must say I've been on the road few times with this 15.6" Asus and build quality seems to be really good honestly. It's thin, has scratch free coating and runs cool but time will tell if 2.3Kg weight is going to "soften" it.

    Put some links here when you find something for your budget..

    See for example Argos has some 11.6" for €350 but Intel Celeron and AMD C50 processors are pretty crap for anything else than very basic home usage

    17 inch screens and toughness don't usually go hand in hand. They are big, heavy and just generally awkward. I was using a 17 inch acer today in a car for diagnostics and it was a disaster. My own laptop is a Lenovo T410 with a 14 inch screen. It's built like a volkswagon. It has rubber shock protection on the hard drive and adjustable auto hard drive lock up in case of sudden shock or movement which can cause disk failure. Your budget of €500 may just about get you into the Thinkpad market.

    Even second hand as long it's possible to have a proper inspection prior purchase!

    I've got T420 too at work and it takes knocks from time to time but never got a glitch in operating. Not the fastest overall performance in the price range but it gives that feeling you didn't buy a toy.
