MHEG5 Aertel is inaccessable with Saorview RTE radio stations.

I notice that RTE's MHEG5 Aertel teletext cannot be accessed when any of the RTE radio stations are being received (on a Saorview approved receiver). Is there any good reason why this is not the case?, is it just not enabled, or some technical reason it cannot be done with radio stations on DTT?
I cannot see why, if everything is all on the one MUX

Because it's a Text Service for the RTE TV channels. Pressing Text on TG4 or TV3 or 3e doesn't load it. They can add their own Text services.

Eventually they may do MHEG5 material specifically for the Radio.

They also can have a DIFFERENT text service for say RTE News Now or RTE2 HD.

TV guide probably doesn't work either does it ?

Just down to the functionality of the receiver / information carried on the MUX

But is there any technical reason why it can't also be linked to from the RTE's radio channels as well, seeing as they are all on the same MUX ??? This would not require any more bandwidth, it would be linking to the Aertel service already there.

Well they already have their own text services, using the much more universal WST text, which works on all approved, and the vast majority of unapproved receivers out there -unlike MHEG5. (not that TV3's teletext is any use to me. It used to have a news service years ago but is useless nowadays).

One wouldn't expect rival broadcasters to be linking to RTE's text service (though of course it would be technically possible since they are on the same MUX)

The Radio services are nearly as Separate from RTE TV as TG4 or TV3 is. I don't know if the Setbox/TV software uses Text Button in Radio mode or not. That is the sole technical limitation.

But Logically it makes no sense as all the Radio Services will be copies of Services on other platforms without MHEG Text.

The BBC does put MHEG based "slides" on some Freesat Radio channels. But doesn't link the BBC Text.

All the Radio may not always be on the same mux as RTE TV channels. Likely TG4 will add their own MHEG5 Text eventually.

It would make sense for the Oireachtas Channel to have its own Text service too.

I'm impressed with how fast the MHEG5 text is.

RTÉ AERTEL is not run by RTÉ TV so in away RTÉ AERTEL is as separate to RTÉ TV as it is to RTÉ Radio. (AFAIK RTÉ NEWS NOW is also under RTÉ Digital).

Could TV3 and TG4 have a digital text service on MUX 1?

    Not enough capacity right now.

And what about Audio Description? (though I am guessing the answer to that).

How much capacity does it take ???

methinks it's more about the costs

For standard EBU ? About 250-300k per channel.

The MHEG data carousel takes up about 1/24th of the Mux space at present (1mbps).

You are right its not about space, its about payola. It is a stat mux after all. In RTE's case the only terrestrial customers who are being served with text are those with MHEG5/Saorview certified STBs. This is despite the all to well known fact that there is widespread use of alternative and legacy dvb-t products out there. And despite that EBU is being maintained by RTE for subscription only TV companies. And despite that EBU text it is actually part of the Saorview min spec requirements and so could be used in a dual system scenario, like it was before ASO.

Typically return channels for data are called within television service mode.

TBH I don't care if people with non-approved kit aren't fully supported. If they get pictures fine, if not then talk to the retailer.

I want series link, I want to search by genre. If I don't get this stuff then the carpetbaggers have won again.

Of course when we get the second Mux it will be sweetness and light

I don't see why RTE cannot provide something similar to the MHEG screens on freeview radio stations. At the very least it should have the radio station logo. After all, we are listening to the radio station via the TV.

BBC stations on freeview link into content already provided by the red button service. So it is do-able.
