Cullens cars for auction on sat.

would ya get a 2011/12 Laguna/megane much cheaper than going to an alternative renault dealer.

That will be his biggest sales day ever

I'd say you'd take one of those Lagunas for peanuts, not a bad car either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,003 ✭✭✭handlemaster

Funny enough people seem to go crazy at auctions buying sometimes more that what you get it at the garage for and that's even without a guarantee....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The trade will snap up the cream of the crop early on and leave Joe Public out bid each other for the rough or expensive stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,003 ✭✭✭handlemaster

I wouldn't think so. If the prices are cheap enough for the dealer to make a profit 'joe public' will get them. As they will be prepared to pay more , not worried about selling them on.

It doesn't always work like that though.

I've been to a few auctions and watched how it works. The trade buy multiple vehicles from auctions regularly where as Joe Public comes the odd time seeking a "bargin". Guess which one the auctioneer has his attention on?

would all these cars still have the three year and five year renault warrenty on them even though they are being bought at auction. Is there anywhere I can see what price that the cars eventually sell for??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,073 ✭✭✭Pottler

I spend my life at auctions, I buy a lot of machinery, tools, vehicles, etc etc, and you can judge the tone of an auction from the get go - if there are loads of bidders sticking up their paws for the same lot the auctioneer will jump the bidding rapidly and the last mug standing (who stuck his hand up at the first low number announced) is suddenly left holding the cat at a high price and is too embarassed to protest.

Lots of private inexperienced bidders equals high prices and few bargains to be had, often you'll get way better value on Donedeal etc.

Anyone who went to Wilsons recent auction of stuff for Sureweld will attest that the prices achieved were excellent and I doubt anyone left with even a glimmer of a "Bargain" - many items sold for close to retail but with no warranty and no comeback. Madness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I remember the tom hogan motors auction, a lot of stuff was sold close to our retail price at the time. People looking for a bargain with no idea what they were buying.

Mainly Renault stuff so prices might be soft, more than likely cars were fully prepped for retail sale. Traders won't be chasing that Laguna .

Huh? It's a 1 year old low mileage car with manufacturer warranty, why on earth would it sell for €12k?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Would have thought around €18-€20k anyway

Limited appeal though. I really like them.

He was trying to flog it for €34k before he went bust. Retail was above €47k new i believe.

    I'd say 20ish too!

But this is a liquidation auction with no reserve, so the auctioneers can be taking bids off the walls as they might be left in trouble surely? Also no concession will be given to dealers re commission, so thats advantage private punter.

Looking at the auction list, I would say anybody looking for a 2011 or 2012 Scenic could well there as they are quite a lot to choose from and they will still have the full factory warranty- for some of them that might be another 4 years.

If your bidding decide in advance what the car is worth to you and don't bid above this

Wouldn't say the pricing will be published anywhere.

I also wouldn't imagine there were too many bargains to be had

If anybody attended it would be v interesting to see some of the prices made

No, not at all, they were just clearing out a lot of stock that was surplus etc. Some very good stuff sold, but prices were very strong. Not far off retail in many cases..

I was there for about 50 lots. Place was full, every car I was interested in went for more than I would expect to buy it for in the trade. But valuing cars is not a science, and other dealers will reckon they did well.

Loads of private people there too, bidding and buying, I'd say Wilsons are very happy.

After a 06 passat with no Nct made massive money I went home alone...:)

Also a lot of private buyers appear totally unaware that the hammer price is not the price they'll pay to go out the gate, there's commision, Vat to be added etc etc. I think a lot of lads with "bargains"(which never look that way to me to begin with) toddle up to pay and get a shock at the final figure. Also, once the hammer is banged down, it's yours, pretty much, no matter what. You might kick up a big stink if you find a fault that was undeclared, but you'll have a job..

I stayed for about 25 lots & from memory

    12 Grand Scenics were making €18k -€20k
    11 & 12 Meganes €13,5k - €16k
Saw one 12 Fluence for c.€16k
First lot was a 06 Fiesta made €4,650

All in all mad money - above retail when you add in auction fees

What money were the 12 Reg Grand Scenic's and Laguna's making do you know? Would be much appreciated to know approx no's

It must be fantastic for Wilsons to be asked to so one of these liquidation auctions - all lots will be sold on the day and they are on massive commission but their costs must be tiny, they don't even have to use there own facility/ light and heat etc yet they still charge a fiver entrance fee. A couple of ad's on Donedeal and a small bit of photocopying in return for commission possibly as high as 100 grand!

What would VAT and auction fees do to those figures?

    Probably around 30% on top.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 993 ✭✭✭bf

11/12 Lagunas made up to €16k.

No VAT on hammer price, but there would be VAT on auction fees

What would the rough fees be?

What would the rough fees be?

Don't know fees for this sale, but Wilson's fees are typically 5%+vat, sometimes with an indemnity fee on top of that (but prob not for a clearance sale). So fees on 16k would be another 950-1000.

Thats good value in my book, good 5k under what you'd pay in a garage.

The commercials probably would have been auction price plus VAT 23% plus Auction fees on hammer price and Vat, so that would be approx 30%

I've bought 4 vans there and you can budget on 1/3 of the bid price going on as "extras". It leaves it not too cheap, imo, but it's a quick way to buy.

2012 Laguna here from a garage asking €19k:
    http://www.driving.ie/used-cars/Renault/Laguna/III-2.0/31513522220553480/

Could probably buy it for €18k cash or just below. A saving yes but of about €1k in my books.

And how would that warranty compare to buying at auction?:D Don't underestimate the value of being able to go for a nice long test drive either. Have to agree with you Bazz, the value is not at the auction just now.
