I had my 8 year old at the dentist today. He was very kind, the the surgery was state of the art. But I felt was a bit pricey? the price of the prescription was €25, an he put some sealant on 2 teeth also €25.

She must go back in a couple of weeks for a bit more treatmet which will cost €80. This treatment is to save the baby tooth that shouldnt have signs of falling out till she is around 11 or 12. It should 'ideally' stay put so as to guide the permenant teeth on their way down when the time comes. So we are doing treatment on 2 of these baby teeth to save them.

My question is ... is this treatment a little expensive, OR not? Not that I don't mind spending money on their teeth! :-) Thanks

Could you clarify OP- €25 for prescription, then: €25 per sealant or €25 for both? & for the next visit,€80 per tooth or €80 for both?

Alternatively, you could check when the school dentist is scheduled- generally it's 2nd 4th & 6th class, this may have changed in recent years however.

Why not get an appointment with the school (Public Health) dentist? You don't need wait till they visit school.

It was €25 for the sealant, and another €25 for him to write the prescription for her to have a antibiotics, for an abcess.(which were another fiver) so €50 for the dentist.

It will be €40 per tooth the next visit (so €80 for 2)

I rang the HSE dentist for my other daughter a few weeks ago, as she also had a baby tooth that was causing problems. She had an abcess as well. they sent out an apptment for the folloing week! even though I told them it was causing issues. The abcess died down, so I thought no more about it. then a few days before her schelduled appt they sent out another letter putting her appt date back 3 weeks!

So ringing the school dentist didnt do me any good for my other daughter, which is why I went private with this daughter this morning. Thats the H.S.E for you! I'm just thankful that I have the money to pay for her treatment, Cos if I didn't they'd be in pain, not eating, and probably missing school.

Ok, €50 for a checkup, prescription and 2 sealants....dentist and nurse working for about half an hour of surgery time, ish?
And €80 for 2 fillings (one likely a pulpotomy, or pulpectomy, if she's had an abscess) the next time. This is fairly trying for an 8 year old- there's a lot of factors to take into consideration, giving them local anaesthetic, keeping cooperation levels for a prolonged period, not to mention the (small) physical size of their mouth! If at all possible, if it can be made as "good" an experience as possible for them, stress-free& not phobia-inducing, it may be worth investing in.
The more serious question, apart from the €25, is why have both sisters have had a dental abscess at such a young age:(
The sealants on the adult first molars are a good idea, and the focus has to be on preventative dentistry(regular checkups), optimal daily oral hygiene& regulating sugar intake. The less treatment they need, the less expensive dentistry becomes...plus, there are no second chances with adult teeth...

    A number of thoughts.
    1) How much is visit to doctor for diagnosis and prescription?
25euro for Diagnosis, treatment plan and emergency care is excellent value dentistry.
    2) 80euro to maintain baby teeth to maintain space is far better than premature loss of teeth, loss of space, crowded permanent teeth and 3-5k euro for braces in teens to correct crowding.

well, they do get regular check-ups! Thank you very much! brushing & flossing is of great importance in this house! If you re-read my post, you'll notice that I mentoned their baby teeth (even those due to fall out at the appropriate age) were reluctant to go! Hense the abcess. One of them was afraid to tell me the had a sore mouth, so I changed dentists. My OH & I have spent quite a few euros on our own teeth, and was 'just' questioning the prices for this new dentist, thats all!
You do realise that sometimes an abcess can pop up and go down again, without a child taking much notice of it?

doctors visit would be €50, but I took her to the dentist first. She is due to have a brace fitted, her teeth are perfect, white, and dead straight,(which I think is great for an 8 yr old tbh) there is just alot of them there! except for this one abcess(all because a tooth didnt want to budge)

I realise a lot more now.
Good luck in the future OP.
