Got some good information from imro recently about online radio.

License covers royalties so i'm wondering how many stations out there can
actually afford to be streaming to 100's of listeners every day.

    Work this out
Internet radio license in Ireland for 1 year allows you 900,000 streams
1 song streamed to one listener = 1 stream.

    Pure Webcasting Service

Continuous, programmed webcasts. Users cannot interact e.g. pause, fast forward, skip tracks or influence output by rating tracks
    €710 + VAT

    900,000 streams per annum

Now imagine you have 1 listener tuned in 24/7 for a whole year.
Each show plays ten songs, that's ten streams per hour for 1 listener.

    Hi,

I am looking to put the base of an web radio, and I just ringed to IMRA to ask for the licence fee info.... If them are to expensive, maybe I will put the base of the radio in another country to avoid the extra costs., it has to be a way as we don't really make money from the station and it's no point to spend money on it don't you think?

No, because you deprive people that are paying royalties the listeners.

There should be a level playing field. "not making money" doesn't make you exempt from the same costs as other content providers.

I could give away all kinds of non-free items on my websites (Music, images, programs, books, other publisher's articles) and I thus wouldn't be making money.

It's breaking copyright and potentially depriving others of income including artists.

I totally agree that IRMA, RIAA, The Record Labels etc are rip offs, but you can't have one rule for people trying to make money and other for people wanting a hobby or to offer content free.

It's iniquitous that USA Broadcast radio only pays one royalty and European stations pay both Publisher and Performer royalties.

If you listen to everyone that gives you advice, you will never know,
The internet is full of unlicensed radio stations, digital stations.
They are simple to set up and everyone and his sister has one.
There's no way to control the licensing for that amount of live streams.

I think if you want to do something, don't let any person or company tell you what you can and can't do, just do it.
Unless you want to pay the costs associated with internet radio which is a lot cheaper than running an FM station.
But they won't be taking your station down if it's internet based, go for it, pay licenses when and if you're making money from it.
Also I'd like to add, if you have some sort of system that tracks the songs that are being played, and gives credit to the artists
then that's enough, you're giving credit to the artists for the music in your shows, and people can click links to buy their music.
I know a lot of musicians and artists that would be happy to have people find their music through online radio, rather than some
government telling people they have a right to charge everyone money for running internet radio, the artists are already being paid,
No need for some gov run body to be in the picture, it's the internet.

I don't want to give anyone any bad advice, that's how I see it and everyone I'm involved with, musicians etc.
I've been involved in several net radio setups since 1996, none of those have been licensed, but all of our friends who make music
have made some good cash from us advertising their tracks during play time, which they are all happy with, no need for a government body to be involved.
Look at di .fm as an example, how long has that guy been doing internet radio.
If you're setting up a physical presence that you will need a license coz they won't leave you alone, on the net forget about it, work on other stuff.
