    Ive had a pull up bar for ages in my house. it has never once built any lean muscle, lazy fecker.

    Basically both allow you to do resistance exercise, depends on what you put into it as to which is better for you. One factor to consider is which will you be more likely to use? I enjoy bodyweight exercises more than free weights, so am more likely to be messing about on a chinup bar than with free weights.

    I use both, a chinup bar is an economical way to get decent resistance easily.

    If I was only allowed use a single piece of equipment it would be gymnastic rings.

    Would prefer a decent set of adjustable dumbells or bar any day.
