You could chance your arm and send a very polite email to one of the executive officers in the psych dept to see if they have the reading list for the course you're interested in. Or, the subject librarian in the library.

Failing that, if you want to brush up on things, it would be in the areas of cognition, neuroscience, perception, statistics for behavioural sciences, developmental psych and abnormal psych. I'm forgetting some, I'm sure. There are many, many books out there, they're expensive enough and you won't really get them in your local council library.

If you want to get your ears used to some lectures, try searching iTunes for psychology and you'll probably find free podcasts by MIT or similar. There are also some free videos here. http://www.academicearth.org/subjects/psychology

Actually it may be worth while checking out your local library. I have a bit of time free recently and I was somewhat surprised at the psych section in a few of the libraries in Dublin. Of course they could not be compared with a university psych section, still it may be worth your while depending on the area you are interested in.

Any 'Introduction to Psychology' textbook would give you an insight into what areas of psychology will be covered. Atkinson & Hilgard would be a classic - it's been going since the 1970s and regularly updated. It's also easy to read with lots of sidebars and pictures and cartoons. You'd probably get a second-hand copy easily, either through Amazon or any university.

I'd advise reading some of Oliver Sachs stuff. It will be mentioned in lectures and stuffs, it won't be core reading or anything but his stuff is amazing and will more than likely make you love psychology!

Here's a 45 minute tutorial on The Psychology of Everything which might be a good free introduction to psychology.

Any reasonable bricks and mortar bookshop will have Sacks's books, or your local library.
