Why do women want a man who can make her laugh?

I see this a lot. When asked what they look for in a man, most women will say they like a man with a "good sense of humour" or "someone who can make her laugh".

Why is this so important for a man to be able to make a woman laugh? Like if you want a good laugh you could maybe go to a comedy gig or something. Why spend away whole life in jokes and laughter when there are many interesting and important questions to explore??

I know, you should get yourself a girl who wants a guy who asks stupid fúcking questions.

I thought they wanted a man who could sing. Ah well, back to the drawing board.

If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I'd take back those (song)words that have hurt you
    And you'd stay

Dunno. Cos life can be hard and laughing is one of life's pleasures?

Because the opposite of getting beat up every night is a guy that makes you laugh. There's no middle ground so you better be funny or else.

    They don't.

It just sounds less shallow than "I want a man i find attractive".

I saw a study which showed that some people can release oxytocin when they laugh. Oxytocin is the chemical that helps you bond with other people(and animals). It also creates a feeling of ease and reduces stress. Also, very few serial killers have an excellent sense of humor.

    So, laugh it up, Fuzzball.

    As above, they don't.

Put a hilarious average looking guy beside a rich good looking guy and see who goes home with her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

But see there's a difference between being funny and making a girl laugh. If you can make a girl laugh it means you get her, and therefore are more likely to share things in common and generally have a good time together.

A guy can make little jokes or have good banter with a girl and make her laugh, it doesn't necessarily mean he's going to be onstage at The Apollo anytime soon. I suppose it's another form of intimacy in a way.

What makes you funny Phasers? Is it your knobbly knee routine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,921 ✭✭✭Remmy

Because it is seen as uncouth to request that they write their net worth on the table cloth on the 1st date. Ah no it's because everyone likes to laugh and they don't want someone who is a bit dour I guess.

Its not a stupid question when you think about it...

You just need to think about it...

Not so - the laughter is in addition to declaring "I want a man I find attractive". Nothing shallow about wanting to find your partner attractive.

Someone else answered how I'd have answered the OP; because life's hard and it's good to laugh, especially, but not only, with the person you're sharing your life with. :D

Oh, it's the feeling of having someone going out of their way to make you happy ^^

BUT, beware! The guy who keeps the whole groups in laughs, moving the threads a little, is appealing. A fella who acts insecurely will not quite find the same success. Fair? Hardly. True? Likely.

Surprisingly most guys turn out to be grumpy b*st*rds..<seriously lol>

At least, if they are funny/good humoured to start with..then there is also a better chance that they may also be kind and good in a crisis, patient ect.. (Don't shoot the messenger!!) as well as being good company ;)

Tis quite annoying when you're not getting the banter back from someone or they can't keep up with your witty quips.

Who wouldn't want to be with someone that could make them laugh. May as well go out with your accountant so.

I had a feeling you meant someone who's always the clown, making jokes, never being serious, when I first read your opening post, but wasn't completely sure.

When I think of a man who can make me laugh, I don't mean someone who always acts as described above. A person can make you laugh AND be also be the kind of someone who thinks and talks about big stuff, thought-provoking stuff etc. It's more to do with seeing the humour in things that you see humour in - sharing a sense of humour, and being someone who, when you're in their company, there's a good chance if there's something to be laughed about, you'll both see/understand it and laugh together.

You make it sound like non-stop one-liners and comedy sketch reenactments. Maybe even some clown shoes for those lulls in conversation :p:p

You want to be able to do those things with a sense of amusement and a grip on the moment.

It was more about why is it so important for a man to be funny/make the girl laugh that its one trait almost all women mention as what they'ld like in their man?

Why does it take precedence over intelligent, deep, thoughtful, kind, caring etc.

And a 12" flute. And Gin, a good supply of gin. And money, they do like a bit of dosh. These women are feckin demanding really!:D Mine is anyway.. Funny, rich, good looking. All men generally look for is a pulse and reasonably good legs...

Good sense of humour or GSOH if you will, can mean a few things. It never or rarely means the group comedian(unless he's the top of the heap). It can mean a man emotionally mature enough to laugh off life's shíte, or it can mean a man who is generally entertaining, it can mean a man who is socially mature* and not afraid to put his humour out there in the group, or in some cases with the high maintenance types it can even mean a man who will take her "emotional shít" and not over-react. Or a varying mix of the aforementioned. On a more basic level being possessed of verbal(and physical) humour can be a sign of higher testosterone men.

*generally speaking and IME being socially mature and comfortable in that is a major trigger for attraction in women. Like I said in general, but that's been my observation. Men don't seem to write off socially awkward women nearly as much as the ladies do with socially awkward blokes.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I remember reading frank skinners first autobiography where he said that birds always said that they were attracted to funny men and he would have them in stitches but then they,d go back home with his better looking mates and shag them instead. Its an advantage being funny but more often than not it doesn't overrule being goodlooking.
