Well they were getting tens of millions annualy from Ireland in Aid. Until they decided to stick 4 million of it in a secret account. That would sure buy a nice gift.

    So what?

As a country they can do as they please. Should we impose our "countries" morals on them?

    That never ends well....

Nobody is imposing anything (not that we have a culture as brutal as this) - we will criticise if we like.

Why? "It's their culture, we've no right to criticise" is not enlightened, it's just a meaningless soundbite.

I don't think Ireland can claim the high moral ground on this one. We only decriminalised homosexuality in 1993.

The proposition was first planned to implement the death penalty for gay people there but got changed. Do you think that stops hate crimes and murders against them? Not a hope.

So what? Well, yeah leave them be to live repressed lives or suffer severe consequences for something they can't help let alone act on them like anyone would on natural instincts. Out of sight out of mind but imagine of you were punished for just being straight, through no fault of your own, and made to feel like the scum of your culture, you probably can't imagine it, because you ever will feel like that.

Being gay has only been legal here for 19 years. My generation is the first to be born legally into a country where it's acceptable to be gay. That's not to say it's always into open arms but things are progressing well and so they should be.

Death, torture, punishment for just being gay? That's not right at all under any circumstances, no more then it to punish or commit someone for the colour of their skin.

Bit of a difference there, as far as i know dogs arent people, unless your one of these PETA nutjobs and since you think its ok to eat them im guessing you arent.

Uganda is ****ing nuts, they're thinking ethics and morals are in the dark ages, they are assbackwards and would like to stay that way so i think if this hateful law is passed we should cut ALL funding to this disgraceful little cesspit of a so called "country" to show our dissaproval of this close to holocaust mentality. The only reason i say "close to" is because they arent gonna round them up to gas them instead they are gonna just allow them to be slaughtered with no repercussions, which is essentially the way it currently works there except now it will be legal.

Yes i did it, i brought up hitler first so i win the thread

Most of us on this thread. "We're in no position to criticise" and similar collective responsibility bollocks is just illogical. You could apply it to anything ever. As long as a person isn't repressing homosexuals themselves they can criticise if they wish.

The op's question was whether "Ireland" should send aid to Uganda in light of their anti gay laws.

And by the way the median age in Ireland is 34.8.

Fact is Uganda is it's own country and there for can do what they like. BUT! People or governments have the right to not do business with them or give them aid knowing how they treat homosexual people.

Well I was two so there was little I could do about a remnant law from the times of Henry the 8th. I think it is reprehensible that the law still existed til so recently in Irish history. But we have progressed significantly since then.

You could benefit from 'expanding your mind beyond "you" ' human rights violations shouldn't be ignored. The current punishment for homosexual acts in Uganda is imprisonment for life. We should constantly draw attention to it and criticise such punishments. Governments should also put diplomatic pressure upon them. Geographical location should not define whether you are accepted into society or not.

Should we also boycott Saudi oil until they give women the vote, allow them to drive, etc.

Will we all be handing back our iphones and other Apple products because they are manufactured in a country with an atrocious human rights record by a company based in a country with the death penalty and hundreds of foreign prisoners locked up without charge or trial?

    Will we f*ck.

Uganda or any other tinpot country is an easy target. We don't have to go that far to get up on our high horse.

Apparently it's wrong to criticise appalling atrocities if your country doesn't have a perfect history/if you don't boycott products from all countries with ruthless governments. Fuk that, people can criticise what they like - we are people, not countries and histories. Objections to such valid criticism looks like going against the grain for the sake of it tbh.

Male circumcision is rightly on the receiving end of a backlash now. FGM is more severe though.
