Will Saorview boxes (Bush from Argos or a Walker) work ok with a USB powered Hard drive for recording or would the hard drive need an independent power supply?

How much current does the hard drive need? Is it more than the 500mA limit of the usb spec?

Maybe it's different for boxes but my walker television isn't that great even with a mains powered external hdd and even worse with a USB flash drive. It seems to struggle with rte 2 HD recordings and fast forward and rewind generally throw something (sound or vision) out. Similarly live pause is buggy. It's a nice plus if it works but I wouldn't recommend anything other than a proper pvr.

I have an HDD that takes ON AVERAGE 200mA. It needs a PSU to work reliably with some older USB ports on laptops. It doesn't work at all on Set box without a PSU.

Startup current of the motor can be the problem.
