Damage caused to back bumper and rear light - no other vehicle involved

Estimate fix costs to damage approx €700

Full bonus protection - are insurance company likley to ramp up cost
    of insurance next year?

    thanks

    Have you a protected NCB?

How much is your insurance premium? One big mistake in relation to NCB protection is it's only valid with your current provider. If you want to move providers (shop around) in the next few years you will have to start from scratch. They will treat the claim as a claim weather your NCB was protected or not.

If I was in you position I'd be slow enough to claim.

Then if you are happy with your insurance company it shouldn't rise too much.

You could always put in your details with one claim for the value of 700 and see what quotes you get?

That will give you an idea if it's worth claiming or paying yourself?

Estimate come from a main dealer or a good indy?

Doesn't have to go to a back street dodgey place to be fixed on the cheap. Bring it to a well known decent indy who has a good rep. It will be fixed to a high standard and cost less than a main dealer. A lot of main dealers will outsource their work to decent independents if they don't have the setup to do it themselves. They will charge you the main dealer price for it tho.

They will increase you premium for making a claim, since you've had an accident your risk increases, and you'll only maintain full NCD with your current insurer.

If you can afford to pay it yourself anything around €1000 is better off not going through insurance.

The figure of €700 take into account your own excess - this will probably be €250 and will bring down your net payment from the insurer to €450 - that is an easier decision.

Also as per earlier poster, is your quote from main dealer - if so you could make a serious saving on that bill.

With protected NCB your NCB remains intact with your current insurer only - if you move insurer within 3 years you will need to declare the claim and will not receive a full NCB.

Depending on your premium I would not be inclined to claim at €700.

When you renew the policy by the way look at the excess level options - you can save yourself a few € by taking on a higher excess - i.e. €500 or €750.

Id sooner take out a credit union loan to cover the cost of a €500 repair (taking into account the excess) rather than make a claim. You might not lose your NCB but your premium will increase and you will lose the ability to change insurer (most will not take on new business that have had a claim in the past year, sometimes up to 3 years). In the long run its just not worth it. Stupid I know, but such is life when it comes to insurance in Ireland...

Op, what is the car's current value? If the car is not worth alot then try and source a used light and bumper and get it resprayed. This route would be cheaper and will not really impact the resale value.

If the car is fairly new or valuable then I'd probably go the insurance route and get it done properly.

Thanks for all the replies - I have a fairly good insurance deal atm and am wary of having this upped next year. I am now thinking I might just take the cost and not make a claim with the insurance company.

Newish car & Repair guy is a good Indy so no problems there...

its quite likely you could get both parts from ebay.co.uk, even possibly get bumper in color, then its just case of getting both fitted...

Not always the case. I have step back NCB and had a claim this year. My insurance provider lets me take my step back (2 years,) NCB with me to other providers should I choose to move.

Was the quote for insurance purposes or was it a quote as if you were paying it out of your own pocket. Alot of times there can be a difference. :)

I thought it was up to the insurer that you would be moving to how they would want to handle your NCB (or lack thereof)? I wouldnt have thought your current insurer would have had any say in the matter?

Hmm, that may be a stumbling block actually.
I did have a look around and the two companies I tried were happy to accept the two years as NCB and I disclosed the closed claim and cost though.

    What's your excess op?

Mine is €250 AFAIR, and I would be paying out the whole lot myself in your situation.

There is alot of nonsense been spouted in this thread.

If he has full protection on his ncb that carries across to ANY insurance company, its not just with his existing company.

There may be an issue having made a claim with a few insurers but he will still have his full bonus.

The claim will have to be declared to any new insurer but that's about it.

OP,if you claim then it shouldn't impact next years premium in any major way except that your existing insurer may not allow any extra discretionary discount at renewal because of the claim.

no it doesn't. no company will recognize it, and he won't get the NCB cert if he wants to change the insurer
