I'm looking some info on a car I am thinking of buying.its an English reg that I'd be bringing through

It's a Volvo s40 09 d5 se sport r design , 2.4 ltr diesel.

All leather

Took it for test drive and seems a great car

Looking 10500 sterling, in and around 13000 euro, with vrt, prob comes in at 17

Is it value for money, any have one ???

Great car to drive but I think it's overpriced, in two years you'd be lucky to sell it for €9/10k. Engine size and Irish car tax regime the problem. Also from what I gather S40 is now out of production damaging resale again

Hard to tell really as there is probably no similar cars here to compare. Most S40 diesels here are 1.6d and 2.0d. D5 is a nice engine though.

Very nice car with decent spec, motor tax would be in Band d so €481 per year at the moment so from that side resale value should not be a major issue.

very nice looker. 1 thing to be really careful of though, i notice the car is in NI. NI has been notorious for having english cat C vehicles come over and repaired and sold on to the irish market. Make sure you really do all the checks on the vehicle to avoid any sadness in the future.

I have a friend who has a V70 with that engine and over 200k miles with no problems. They are a great engine with plenty of poke andy good economy too. I think its a bit expensive though because sterling is strong and the vrt is relatively high, but it would be difficult to get one at cheaper money

Nice motor and that engine will run without issues for a long time (seen them back with in excess of 250,000km with no major issues).

When it comes time to sell though, it won't be worth anymore than a 2.0d, and might actually be worth less due to the high emissions.

I doubt front tyres will last long on it though. The 2.0d has enough issues getting power down so get used to the flashing yellow on the dash.

One thing you may struggle with is the speedo clock when you bring it in. I'd advise to talk to the NCT and see if they've passed any UK Volvo's recently. The Speedo is only in MPH (or was on a couple of 09 V70's I looked at that had come across the water). There is an option on the OBC to display current speed in KM/H, but I don't know if that's enough to get it registered, or whether you'd need to change the clocks (which will be pricey).

Also, check with the dealer to see if they have the certificate of conformity (probably don't) as it's €100 + VAT to get one from Volvo Ireland.

theres a few in the uk for 8k stg in that spec ....so he's a tad expensive.

Hi ROR, have you any more info on the need for certificate of conformity ? I was never asked for one on a used import. The only time I encountered that requirement was when exporting from Ireland to the UK ?

@OP, Volvo looks a nice car, but scanning the guy's other stock, I thought his prices were a bit high in general. Did I see a 07 A4 TDi listed at 10,700 stg ??? Although it is a lovely looking car.

We've brought a few cars in this year for a particular customer due to needing VAT qualyfying 2011 cars. We're getting someone else to do the legwork, but I thought CoC was required for registering imported cars, so made sure it was provided with each. Not sure if it was checked at reg time though.

Most UK cars have some sort of service history that can be traced as it is the norm over there to have such data recorded, just because it's not mentioned in the advert description doesn't mean they don't have one.
