Pre reg car - Dealer stalling on Reg cert.

    Hi,

Brother recently bought a new car. It was pre regd and he got a few thousand off it. There were no miles on the car and it had only been registered the week before.
This is all fine and very happy with the deal etc but its about a month now and no cert arrived. He rang garage and they went into a long tale of how they are supposed to keep the pre reg cars as demos for 3 months to avail of the various discounts available to them. Im not sure is this a discount from the manufactuer / distributor or is it some tax law that allows a reduction on the vat & vrt seeing as the car was supposedly a demonstrator.
Can anyone explain the detail involved in these situations.
Certainly to me, it appears to be a very dodgy practice from a main dealer. They have now said that it will be sorted in the coming days but Im guessing it will be spun out to 3 months. If that is the case, they will also only be recording the change as having taken place at that later time and that doesnt sound the best tbh.

Quite normal, usually the distributor holds the cert for 3 months. One way around this is for the garage to get a duplicate vrc then do the change of ownership, or if they know the vrc serial number they can transfer it online.

It's not dodgy as such, the only people losing out are the distributor, who aren't making as much profit from the dealer as normal. This has been going on for years and the distributors know well. P

Been there myself and it IS dodgy. One of the first questions insurance companies ask is whether the car is registered in your name. If it's the garage's name and not the driver, you could find yourself in a bit of bother if you have an accident!

One of the conditions AXA have is that "You or your spouse or partner is the owner or registered owner of the Car".

You become owner as soon as the sale of the car to you is complete, you don't need to be the registered owner for them to accept you.
