What are those new lay byes or parking space on the side of the road?

They have a solar panel and a wind turbine attached to them as well.

Could be a parking space for a camera van. The other equipment is to measure the road temperature so they can predict where and when to spread grit or salt

Traffic counter locations, if the road has been saw cut and traffic count loops installed then you'll see bitumen strips running across the carriageway in front of the lay bys. The parking spaces are for maintenance vans etc.

A bit related to that: can someone tell me why the lay-bye's between Portlaoise and Roscrea haven't been opened or why they are closed at present. There are two just after the toll bridge.

I rarely drive to Limerick so I might have got this wrong, but i've driven to Roiscrea 3 times in the past 10 days and they were always closed. Hardly good practise to have nowhere to stop if you're tired.

I think the new ones are charging points for electric cars.

Also wondering what these are. Seen a few of them around. Can't find any info anywhere else about them.

No info whatsoever. But they look like traffic control points. Loops are installed indeed. :)

You could be right. From what I see they seem to be placed where speed vans are usually so must be something to do with that crowd..

    O.K. That's what I know so far:

Today I spotted a man standing at one of them installations. ;)

Stopped my car and gone to ask what they're for.

Got a confirmation - these are indeed for traffic measuring purposes. :]

So did he measure your car?

    How long was it?

    :)

They are NRA weather stations, hence what looks like a turbine. It's for measuring wind speed.

    Nope.

NRA weather stations are different and built up years ago.

    Here's one of them:

I seen a news atricle a long time ago that the councils closes lay-byes due to lack of funds to clean the up the litter saying when more funding is available they will reopen. So apparently it's down to local council to open and close as they see fit.
