Apologies if this is a stupid question, I'm a rugby fan, but not a devoted one?

Anyway today and a few weeks ago I was watching a match and noticed the rules for a scrum to engage have followed.

It seems to have gone from crouch, touch, pause engage, to crouch, touch set?

If this is correct, then why and what are the benefits?

Two issues I noticed, there might be more.

1 was the pause, which seemed to lack any sort of uniformed length and just resulted in props engaging early in an attempt to get a head starts (like a 100m sprinter). They removed that.

2 was the word engage, which has two syllables and caused confusion. That seems like a strange reason but certain refs demanded fronts rows engage at the end of the word and others let them engage whenever they want as long as he was saying "en...."

Overall it's been an excellent change from a playing perspective.

    Thank you!

I have noticed that there seems to be less of the "lets all wallop into each other" approach where both front rows seemed to be intent on being the first to engage, and more of a calmer approach, where they are not like caged tigers after the "pause"

So basically what you are saying is what I've noticed.

Dunno if there is any truth to it, but the few games I've watched with the new rules, the scrums seem to be collapsing early less, possibly as both are more or less engaging on time?

Irishbucsfan has summed it up fairly well.
the length of the pause varied from ref to ref and with no uniform length between all refs there was a lot of early driving.
engage is a 2 syllable word and teams were hitting on the ref saying the "en"
For me its taken a while to get used to a quick 3 word process compared to the much longer process last season but now ive played a good few games i prefer this new process

Even watching it makes a difference.

I played about ten years ago, can't remember the rules from then at this stage :)
