Start the pc in safe mode with networking-download superanti spyware and run a full scan.http://www.superantispyware.com/ (the free one is fine).

What anti virus are you using?

Have you ever cleaned up the disc. That is removed all temporary internet files and other rubbish You should have your browser set to delete history and cookies on exit.

Also set AVG not to start on boot up and see if that speeds up the boot. If it does check the settings and make sure it isn't scanning on start up. Also make sure you haven't got more than one AV running. More than one AV doesn't improve security it makes your machine unusable.

Microsoft Security Essentials is also quite good. I would also recommend installing malwarebytes, and running a scan, as well as ccleaner.

All are easy to use, and light on resources.

    1. Back up your files.
    2. Reinstall Windows / perform a system restore.
    3. If it is still slow then the hard drive needs replacing.

You can mess around moving files and scanning stuff for hours - but you can't been a clean windows install.

I agree with wingnut. It's too easy not to just reformat the machine and treat it like new.

Granted it is a Compaq, and as a brand they frankly market to the low end of the spectrum anyway: you think to yourself buying this "Oh, that isn't much money" But then yeah, those low-end PCs are the ones that are obsolete in 3 years; I define obsolete as something that falls below the industry standard for a new PC (Dual Core, 1.4Ghz+, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 320GB HDD as minimum specs). Invest more money, get more time out of it. If you bought a 4GB machine with a Core2Duo 5 years ago, it still sits above the minimum spec. That spec is basically what software and web content developers use as a yardstick to gauge how demanding they make their software. If your PC was low-end 8 years ago, for instance, youtube didn't exist 8 years ago. Good luck running youtube on that thing without an upgrade.
