Doing a race outside of Ireland

I think of running somewhere in Europe next year so looking for tips on travelling and how early to arrive?

If doing a marathon on a Sunday would arriving on the Saturday lunchtime be ok? Means I can have a normal sleep on the Friday night instead of getting a red eye.

Sure shorter runs would be less critical and I am sure everyone is different but roughly speaking.

When you arrive, is often dictated by the registration/number collection process. Other factors would include:
The length of time you have to travel to get there (need to recover).
    Time-zone differences - acclimatize or push-through
    Availability of flights/transport
    Cost of hotels/accommodation
    Desire to explore/tourist

When travelling to a race, I like to get there a day or two early to do some sight-seeing or exploring. After a race (I've only traveled for marathons and other longer distances) I tend not to be too keen on walking around too much. Obviously Europe doesn't present as much of a challenge, but you still need to make sure you can pick-up your number on time, and that there will not be any transport delays.
