Customize your diet is the first thing anyhow. You were probably eating calories for your work out, so cut back on these.

Do what you can, we have no idea what you illness entails so as said try swimming or walking or light cycling. I wish you all the best.

There is nothing to stop you from training once the condition is under control.

It's a chronic inflammatory condition but once under control you'll be able to do whatever you want. Perhaps not heavy weights but running/swimming/cycling.

There is no illness known to man that exercise cannot help.

oh right, so exercise will help my 5 year old currently in an asthmatic situation ?

I am very sorry to hear about your situation OP. I teach Yoga amd I thought you might want to read up on that to do your research and see if that might be an option for you. Best wishes to you.

Of course. Anything that results in increased oxygenated blood pumping around the body is good.
If your son is asthmatic just ensure he has used his ventolin beforehand and to stop should he feel wheezy.

Having said all that, what type of exercise regime have you in mind for a child of 5?

Way to pick an entirely pointless fight but yes, asthmatics can partake in many sports and exercise with little adverse results.

specifically sports with interval activity, for a 5yr old maybe look into: gymnastics, horseriding, swimming, walking and some running, ie orienteering, ice skating, archery, dance, rock climbing. sailing, canoeing all sports which can be enjoyed by a child and their parents together.

basketball can be good as there are often periods of rest. maybe even martial arts, judo, TKD, boxing if she grows into that type of person.

there are probably more to look into. just because you're asthmatic doesnt mean you can't exercise at all. and a lot of cases of asthma can be improved with exercise.

I did judo with a lad when i was about 7/8 he had really bad asthma induced by exercise and he was fine, stopped occasionally to rest or use his inhaler. as we got older 12/13 years old he grew into one of the most sporty people i ever met.

OP, speak to your GP about what exercises you can do/are best for your condition. They may put you in contact with a physiotherapist also.

apologies for derailing the thread, and morning bad mood.

Dogmatic phrases such as these annoy me though :

It gives a false impression that should anything happen, off you go cycling, and you'll feel better, which is not always the case. And I will not swap the nebulizers for a basketball game any time soon in the case of my little son. I am perfectly aware that he can practice sports and exercise when he is well.

OP sorry again, I wish you the best, and hope you'll get this under control soon. I have psoriasis and experience arthritic pains linked to that for stretches of time, and it's very disheartening to feel so rotten all the time.

I must say I have read online of people whose doctors did in fact recommend not to practice any sport at all (temporarily I'm sure) so as not to exacerbate the inflammation and more importantly, do any damage to the articulation(s) affected. This was for psoriatic arthritis.

Obviously you will not send your son off to play sports if he's experiencing an asthmatic episode. Most people, hopefully you too, are not that thick.

People should always rest when not feeling well, whether it's a flu or acute arthritic flare up.

It's the times in between when exercise is of immense benefit. Didn't think I'd have to explain that!

Theres an old tribal exercise of bouncing on the balls of your feet while shaking your arms. I find it gets my heart pumping straight away like a good jog does. Perfect exercise for people like the Innuit who would be stuck indoors in multiple layers cos of the cold.you dont have to have a racetrack in sunny weather to get your cardio.
