    Hey :)

I was here a few weeks back with a Petrol Vs Diesel Thread (short story: most felt petrol was the way to go, mileage wise, DPM, DPF etc.) and I was interested in an Audi A4

A mate was telling me that these TFSI's are supposed to be worth a look.. I don't know much about them.. can anyone shed some light on what they're supposed to be good at? Is it better power with fuel efficiency?

Was thinking of heading out to view this tomorrow.. mileage feels a little high for 2008 (probs a rep car) but wondering what the board thinks :)

    Thanks

120 bhp version would be poor. I have a 170 version in an A5 and you couldn't have any less really.
The engines are pretty reliable with my 08 needing only normal servicing which is cheap too.
I don't agree that there is any great mpg improvement over the old 1.8T engines. Off the top of my head, I get just under 30 mpg average with 35 on a run driving hard enough.

You got to love the description of it being the top spec model when it clearly is the entry level model that doesn't even have a multi-fucntion steering wheel.

OP, here is a higher spece 160bhp version for similar money with lower mileage if you are willing to consider private sales. Nicer colour too imo:

As I see it the red one is an ex-lease car so it's probably been serviced on time every.time and taken care of. They generally do get well treated by lease companies.

Change the alloys on that car and it would make a world of difference to it. Also if you feel it lacks in power you could get it remapped which would bring it to closer 160bhp.

While the above black example is nicer than the red one, I for one would not be confident handing over €12k in cash for a private sale. Even if everything checked out it's still too much of a risk for me and I'd be looking to go down the dealer route if I was spending that much cash. :)

I had to pass on the one I looked at anyway, but I was a bit disappointed at the salesmans patter when I previously asked about cruise control etc.. "you'd have to go for the executive model for that". Saw the logbook (leaseplan) and service history and was all genuine.

Honestly wasn't expecting it to be so "cosy". I'd need to put 3 people into the back from time to time and they'd be squished in there. I'll have to leave this as a dream and find something more practical

Thanks for the link above .. but yeah.. would never go private for that kind of money with no comeback

Thanks for the replies guys, I knew there was a reason I come here with all my car questions ;)

Get an A6 then if A4 is too small.

Cheapest A6 Petrol 08 on Carzone. Would be better with leather or at least Black cloth.

Saw that Accord, looked nice but even as 2008 it's taxed at the higher rate and is only likely to increase in the December.. as for the Audi.. nice nice nice... but private and still an a4 ;):(

I have the 200bhp 2.0 TFSI in my Seat Leon. It's a great engine in terms of power and refinement. Very very smooth running and gives a fantastic kick of power about 1500rpm.

While it is very powerful, I don't really find it economical. This is limited to my usage of the 2 litre so not sure how other TFSI engines compare, they are probably more economical.

I drive from Dublin to Cork maybe once a month and with the cruise control set to 120km/h in 6th gear for most of the journey I get about 25mpg. For comparison I used to do the same drive in a 2 litre normally aspirated Subaru Impreza and get about 30mpg.

If I floor it and rev the nuts out of it then it does like to drink fuel. I went for a "spirited" drive around SallyGap one morning a few weeks ago and it drank about €50 worth in 90mins. But I didn't buy the car for economy runs, I bought it for fun and like I said my experience is limited to the 2 litre TFSI so not sure how relevant this will be for you.

    Good luck with the purchase!

    Definitely not ;)

I have to say in terms of power delivery and refinement it is one of the best engines I've experienced in a long time.
I've been tempted to get it remapped lately (apparently it will push up from 200bhp to around 240bhp quite easily) but I really don't feel like it needs it, day to day it has plenty of power to put a smile on your face.

As I see it, that Accord was registered before June 2008. As such would it not be in the same rate as the Audi's you looked at?

Now I'm no fan of those Honda's but you would get a nicer, bigger, roomier car for your money. The only thing it it wouldn't be as fast as a 200bhp+ A4/A6.

Yep as I thought it would, so it's the exact same tax as a 2.0 Audi. Both are €660 per year AFAIK...

Isn't the A4 1.8tsi €481 on the new system? That's less than €200 difference spread over 12 months which equates to around €2.30 extra a day. Is the A4 2.0tsi of that vintage any cheaper to tax?

BTW the tax on the A4 will be increasing in the budget too.

    €2.30 per day? €700 extra?:D

The 2.0T actually has emissions of 159g/km so that would make it €481 as well I think?

Sorry that should be €2.30 per week. You sure about the 2.0Tsi though? Isn't it a detuned version fo the MkV GTi engine which had high emmissions back then?

As I see it, I just had a look online and the 2.0T in the newer model A4 has 211hp and 159g/km of CO2 for the manual, not sure what the Auto is though.

211bhp is the same power as the newer GTi and as far as I'm aware that also qualifies for €481 road tax.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Actually that A6 2.0tsi is on the old tax system which would suggest that it was higher on the newer system. Owners of Jan - Jun 2008 reg cars had the choice to put it on which ever was lower back then. I cannot imagine the owner staying on the old system if it was cheaper on the new system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I was going on the A6 that was linked to earlier not the A4. The red A4 2.0tsi in the link is the old model which threw me off.

The A4 I mentioned above is 481 per year.. that's about the same as what I'm paying for my 2001 1.6 petrol right now.. and I was trading up to a 1.8 with a more efficient engine and getting a hell of a lot more car for my money regardless of whether you like Audi or not ;)

I wouldn't have been considering anything that was starting higher than 480 (such as the Accord) and was likely to rise again. If I hang onto the 1.6 my tax is going up.. If I buy the A4 it's going up anyway as it will with the accord.. but there's a big difference adding 50 yoyos to 480 than 660.. the country's enough of a rip off as it is without giving them more money if I'm to believe what I heard about PRSI, Pension and USC changes in the budget.

Fair enough but you are still paying the bones of €10k to trade up to save relatively small money on motor tax. The €50 increase is just tabloid speculation, it could go up by more and will for years to come, we will not know until 5th December however. Motor tax is not the most expensive part of car ownership yet most folks base their entire purchasing decision around it. The biggest expenses around car ownership are maintenance and depreciation.

    Hi Bazz

It certainly wasn't my only factor in choosing.. I was merely replying to the posts above. If you can pop back up to the OP you'll see about the effiency of the TFSI as an engine (and costs to run therefore) and I also said I wouldn't be buying it cos the back was too cramped for the occasional 3rd adult I'd have to put in there. If I'd let my heart rule my head and bought it then you'd have a point maybe but I've taken on a lot of the advice here along with the fact that the car just isn't the right one for what I need ;)

    Cheers
    James
