Getting a P45

    Hi,

I've recently accepted a job for next year, and while they haven't asked for it yet, I'm sure they will want my P45 as part of the process.

Thing is, last job I had in Ireland finished in 2008, and I have mislaid the P45 (which I know I was given). There is a reasonable possibility that I may have shredded it along with bank statements from that time in the last year.

I'll continue to look for it, but what is the process I need to go through if I can't find it? Citizens Information only really gives advice for when the employer is not being forthcoming with it, which isn't applicable in my case. Is it possible to get a replacement (I'd presume not)?

A P45 is only relevant in the tax year it is issued so one issued in 2008 is not relevant to 2012 or indeed 2013.

When you start your new job, (I presume you told them you where unemployed until this role came alone) you bring with you your PPS number and the payroll department can ring the tax office and set you up as their employee, and your tax cert will be issued.

Both you and your employer will receive a copy of this cert, yours will come to your house as the payroll dept will give your name, address and PPS number to the revenue.

More efficient to have the OP ring the tax office with employer's company reg number and get them to issue the tax cert. I found this quickest previously.

This is the quickest way to deal with it.

And even if the employer rings revenue, you should ring them yourself, and make sure they are 100% clear about what income you have, or haven't, had since January this year.

The reason is that you could have a lot of unused tax credits from earlier this year, but you won't get immediate access to them if Revenue suspect that you may have had income they don't know about.

So call them and clear it up.

The job isn't until 2013 so tax credits from this year are irrelevant as they do not transfer to the next tax year.

The information above only applies if you have been unemployed this year and are commencing employment before 2012 ends.

Op do ring the revenue yourself yes it is quicker the only reason I said to let payroll do it is some times employers get a bit odd over you doing this ...in my time working in payroll I have met a few but it really isn't an issue who rings revenue, just ask your employor for their employer number so you can register with the revenue...its no biggie
