Hi. I want to connect my laptop to my TV. Is it possible to do this via my SKY box. My tv is HD but doesn't have a HDMI connection. Will it work if I use a HDMI cable from the laptop to the SKY box?

    Thanks

    No.

Tell us exactly what connections are on the TV and the laptop and we'll see if it's possible.

The TV have scart lead connections and AVS. My Laptop just has the HDMI port

A TV isn't really an HDTV without HDMI.

Perhaps it works as VGA or DVI monitor?

You can adapt cheaply from HDMI to Digital DVI, but an HDMI to Analogue DVI or VGA is very expensive, as dear as a small HDTV with HDMI.

Unfortunately Consumer Protection is fairly rubbish and sellers got away with labelling anything more exotic than a regular LCD + tuner + SCART as so called "HDTV ready" or "HDTV" when nothing of the sort.

I've no idea to be honest. That's what it says on the port on the TV

Take pictures of the ports and post them here, and we'll be able to tell you of cheap converters. Something like this may work for you, but there are lots of cheaper options which may be available to you if we know what connections your TV has. Or let us know the full TV model.

Which laptop ? (HDMI only kills the next bit but ...)
A good few used to have composite out / svhs
check in display properties for a television option

Just to be aware unless your TV has a HDMI or VGA socket the resolution will never be good enough to use as an external monitor. Might play dvd's and stuff fine. If you use an external box that costs less than a second hand laptop with composite out then say bye-bye to picture quality.

HDMI on laptop, SKY is OUT only. TV is IN only. Also you may find that the laptop only exports low res HDMI if there is any sort of content control in your media player.

HDMI - DVI converters are less than $2 on the Chinese sites, it's just a physical adaptor.

Only works for Digital DVI, not Analogue DVI pins

    Good point

And you've to remove the metal plate in the adaptor with a pair of needle nose pliers. But once done an old HDMI monitor / Projector now has a DVI port.
