Hi! Doing some research for the boss!! We are presently reviewing our posts of responsibility......the WSE suggested we spend a little time on them.
Does anyone know exactly what the duties should be for :1) an 'A' Post (assistant principal) and
    2) what duties should be on the schedule for a 'B'post (special duties teacher).

We are a voluntary secondary school, with a couple of 'A' posts and 4 'B'posts. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Have you looked here? There are plenty of links included in the article:
    http://www.asti.ie/pay-and-conditions/conditions-of-work/posts-of-responsibility/

I'm sure the TUI and DES have plenty of info on their sites too.

I am genuinely shocked that any school management would not be fully aware of duties involved, and have properly allocated posts!! There is a lot of money at stake and posts should be utilised fully to improve the running of the school.

Posts are entirely dependent on the needs of the school...whats needed one school isnt always needed in another...ye need to see where the needs lie and 'plug those holes' so to speak !!

A Posts are Year Heads anyway for a start. Maybe program coordinators if the school has them AND the numbers doing them justify it.

IT Coordinator should be a B post at least.

All of the above Should be posts. The rest I'd imagine should be down to the individual school.

In some schools year heads are not even a B post never mind an A post

What 'actually is' and what 'should be' are two different things. I'm quite sure the management is fully aware of the duties involved but the actual allocation of posts can be historical and not in fact properly constituted or allocated - the fault of management and/or staff.

The staff in the OP's school is in a particularly lucky position - carte blanche at re-setting the situation.

I hope they will be careful to read the original documentation fully and capture it's spirit, keeping regard for proportionality of A v B posts and the workload involved in the current school and social climates. Stay objective, and be careful not to be led in certain directions unwittingly by either staff or management.

In conspiracy theory mode - the fact that the boss wants other people to research the duties (when the boss well knows) could suggest that (a) they want the staff to be involved in putting peer pressure on the colleagues that have these posts or (b) the boss wants to blame the research committee and their 'recommendations' for the boss's decisions later... :P

Of course, it could just be an educational exercise for the whole staff - to find out how things are done in other schools - and to open up the range of duties so that the posts are more realistic.

Just curious, in those schools what is an A post if it isn't year head?
