Exchanging expired Australian licence

Hi guys, did a search and couldn't find a similar thread so hope nobody has asked this before.

When I was in Australia a few years back I got an open licence there (full basically) but it expired September 2011. I got in touch with the motor tax office who said I need a "letter of entitlement" to exchange the licence for an Irish full one. I've emailed Queensland transport so just waiting on them to get back to me. I already have a provisional that I could renew at any time if I wanted but it would be so much handier to just swap the Australian one and not go through all the rigmarole again.

My question is has anyone been through this process before? Are the Aussies quick about sorting out this letter I need and will it be a straightforward enough process? Should I hold off applying for the provisional renewal?

Do not apply for a provisional.

They should just exchange it so long as it is not expired longer than 10 years.

As I understand it, it should be no problem to exchange the licence as it's only just expired. Licences have to be expired 10 years before you have to re-take the test.

    Cheers lads, that's a relief.

I will still need this letter of entitlement from Queensland transport though, right?
