New tyres for Mini

    Howdy,

I need to change 4 tyres on a 2002 mini cooper. Currently there are 4 run flat tyres on AND there is a spare wheel on the underside along with kit. Is there any reason why I wouldn't change them for regulars?

Does the run flat tyre indicator work with regulars or will it come on and stay red?

If it does come on will I be able to disable it in case it's a potential NCT fail?

    Appreciate any responses, thanks...

No issue. If you have the standard 15 wheels do not get pirelli p3000 , they are very noisy. Re-calibrate the tyre pressure indicator once you have new tyres, should stay off and not give trouble. The only time it lit up in the wifes mini was after swapping wheels (between axles) - ie it sensed a difference, so it works with normal tyres alright.

    They're 195/55R/16 87H

I was going to get Matadors, she's drive to work and back and that's it. 2002 and under 50,000 miles

That's cool it works with normal tyres also, thanks.

You will buy Hankooks in that size, fitted and balanced for around €75 a corner from a local tyre centre. I would rate them above the likes of Matador.

I'd check that with insurance company. Car modification is a broad term.

Anyone know where I can get Hankooks in south Dublin? I've rang 3 places so far and I've been offered Barum, Matador and Fire-something (not Firestone)

Good point about the insurance, will give them a call

Check to be sure Whyner (never assume with insurance companies), but the standard spec for the R50 Coopers would have been normal tyres I'd say, so there shouldn't be an issue.

That's what I was thinking. The wife didn't buy it new so someone must have replaced the original regulars with RFTs, why else would there be a spare tyre and kit.

Or they came across a cheap spare wheel kit and planned to move to standard tyres later but sold the car on in the mean time. Does the spare wheel actually fit the car?

Yes, perfectly, the toolkit fits into a square holder under the boot mat and the spare wheel is on the underside of the car, released by clips in the boot. Is this unusual?

    Like this - http://www.mini2.com/forum/wheels-tyres-brakes/190458-how-retrofit-spacesaver-spare-wheel.html

Sorry does it fit - Don't know yet

Standard fitment on the Cooper AFAIK.
TBH, I couldn't see herself making a great job of retrieving the spare from underneath and fitting it on a dark wet roadside. Call me as first resort, breakdown assist as second option, can of tyreweld and a 12V compressor in the boot as backup.

Spare is probably in poor condition anyway after 10 years of rain, muck, road salt, exhaust heat etc.
