Was just thinking their about my shot and hole of the year.

Would be interesting to hear the shot and hole (can be different from shot) that sticks out in your mind from this year.

I'll kick it off with my

    Shot
Shot came on the Par 3, 11th in Tulfarris.(168yards)
Water to the left, rough and bunker to the right of green.
Ended up pin high but 25 yards to the right in the rough.
Got to ball and seen that I had fairly good lie, but a fairly big bunker lay between me and the pin.
So like the idiot I was (slightly less of an idiot now) back then, I couldn't wait to get the 64* wedge out.
Hit it perfectly, ball went a mile in the air and landed a foot away from the pin before it started dancing around the hole. Came to rest half an inch from the hole, was full sure it was going to drop! If Phil Mickelson was dead, he'd be up there smiling down on me :D

I hate this shot being my shot of the year btw, the 64* has got me in more trouble than not throughout the year. I now only use it from the green side bunker or on the rare occasion that there's a bunker between me and pin and I need to get up and down (i.e if I've 3 shots left to score, I'll just take another club and play away from pin with the hope of 2 putting for a point)

    Hole
Came on the Index 1, Par 4 ,9th in Elm Green.
Not the nicest hole I've played all year but it's a course I've played a few years ago when I was just getting into golf.
I've always struggled with this hole, there's a near 90 degree dog leg left that involves a big carry over OOB trees.
For some reason I was playing well, and for some stranger reason I was feeling confident with my driver. Stepped up and let rip, carried the trees on the left and ended up in perfect position for approach shot.
(Playing partners thought it was OOB but I was 100% it made it, and it ended up making it with a lot to spare)
I had about 190 yards to the pin so out came the 4 iron.
Normally after a good drive, my excitment takes over and I shank the 2nd.
Not this time, as someone said on another thread :) I "pured it"!
It was heading for the pin from the moment I hit it, was expecting it to be within a few feet but when I got to the green I seen that I was left with a 12 footer.
My putt for birdie was a good one, quite a bit of break but I read it well and it just ran by the right hand side to leave me a few inches for par.
Walked off the green delighted with myself, a hole that had given me some much trouble previously was conquered, I felt like a golfer for the first time in my golfing life!

It's a sad reflection that my hole of the year was a par, but hey, that's were I am. Would be great to hear others shot/hole of the year!
I've had a grin on my face since starting typing! :)

    Moyvalley 7th hole:

Hit a tee shot left into rough. Was left with 188yards into a head wind. Absolutely hooked the nuts off it into thick gorse like rough left of the green.
Dropped and played a provisional but this time I "pured it"(still cracking me up that shout) and landed on the green. 3 bounces and dissappeared into the hole. Par for 3pts on the index 2.

Lovely walk up to the green!

    Hole/Shot of the year:
11th Tipperary Index 1, Wayward drive left me with a row of trees blocking the green. Had been practicing to draw(hook i should say) the ball at the range the last few weeks(trying to eradicate a slice). Anyway. had about 170 left to the pin. Decided to go for it aimed about 20yds left of the pin and let rip. Exactly how i had imagined it in my head to work out (flight wise). Pitched about 10ft in front of the pin and ran about 15 past to the fringe at the back. 2 putt for Par. Delighted!! :D

Luckiest shot of the year. 14th Tipperary(Favorite hole) Creamed the drive down the middle. Left with around 145. 8 iron topped it left of the green where there is a bank with a wall where the 15th tee box is. Hit the wall and kicked back right to about 1 foot from the hole. Tap in birdie!!! :D:D

My shot of the year was definitely on the 12th Hole in Grange Castle, a par 5. Measures about 520 yrds from the competition tees.

Hit a very solid drive just left of centre of the fairway, which left me with 247yrds to the centre (based on my GPS). Flag was forward on the green, about 240 yrds. A stream runs across the front short of the green, about 210 to carry it.

Was a slight tail wind and was striking well on the day. Felt like I could get the 3-wood over the stream at least.

Caught it perfect, a high draw (which I'd been working hard on hitting throughout the year) landed just at the front of the green (into a slight upslope which killed the pace) and bounced up to pin high, about 8 feet from the cup.

Rolled in the eagle putt too, was chuffed!!!

    Has to be Oosthuizens albatross.

Oh hold on. MY shot of the year. Can't think of anything. There must have been so many... not.

Some good shots...some incredibly bad shots (mainly unmentionables for some reason) but two that spring to mind came within very short space of each other.

Played a society game in Knockanally. 7th hole (I think) is a par 5. Albeit not a tough par 5 that day with the wind that was helping. Drive and an eight iron (yes) to be left of the green with unfortunately a bunker between me and the hole with a steep downslope to the hole that would see the ball roll of the green on the other side. Slid the 56 deg wedge under the ball, landed exactly where it needed to be and rolled down to the hole. Thought I had the eagle only for it to stop about an inch from the hole. Easiest birdie putt ever :-)

Two holes later on the same day, the 9th hole is a par 3. Mate took an 7 iron and left it at the back of a split level green with no chance of stopping the ball. So I hit an 8 (pure). It was at the flag all the way, came down, hit the flag (the material bit, not the pin) and stopped 10 inches from the hole. I know that as we had a nearest the pin on that hole and we measured it :-)

Unfortunately though the index 1 is in between those two holes and I managed to scratch that one. So I went birdie scratch birdie.

14th hole in Bearna, Co. Galway. Par 4 340 yards ish.
    5 wood off the tee
52 degree wedge to a green where you usually can't see the bottom of the pin.
walked up to the green. no sign of the ball. there she was nestled in the bottom of the cup.
    eagle for 4pts : )

Hole of the Year: 15th Glasson, Athlone. Par 3 off the back sticks (for a fundraising classic, still has me baffled!) Water to the left and all around the green, strong breeze coming in off the lake. Hit a lovely crisp 5 iron and hit the pin. Was closest to the pin hole too.

Fav Shot of the year - I have 3 and all were on the same day in Mount Wolseley in this years Ryder Jug event.

We were 3 down going into the last 4 holes and not looking great. I hit a monster drive on the 15th leaving me a PW to the green. Opposition went first and stuck his second shot to about 15ft from the hole - he didn't half gloat about it either. I hit my second to about 7 foot which shut him up very quick. We won the hole. 2 down, 3 to go.
Next fav shot was my second on the next par 3, myself and playing partner both made right ass of our tee shots and landed about 75 & 50 yards respectively from the green. Opposition both landed theirs just off the green. We both hit our second shots to a few feet and won the hole. 1 down, 2 to go.

My next favourite shot was my second shot on the 17th. Hit another cracker down the middle and so did one of the opposition – was only mm between them in length. Myself and partner were convinced mine was closer to the hole but they insisted I played first. Usual matchplay banter and they were all chat as I set up to take my shot so I stood off it, looked and nailed a 9 iron onto the green. One of the best shots I’ve hit in a long time. This rattled the lads and we won the hole easily.
    Was a great day out.

7th hole at Portmarnock Links, par4 index 4. 205 yards left into the green with a bit of right to left breeze, 5 wood hit the flag and in, 5 pointer and 1st eagle on a par 4 for me.

5th at Milltown, playing in a scramble.

Perfect drive down the middle, landed just beside the bunker that comes in from the right hand side. About 20 yards further than any of my team, so agreed my ball would be played.
Didn't touch it as it was sitting nicely, 3 wood carried to just off the front, and ran up to about 3 feet from the pin.
None of the others reached the green so my ball in use again. Had the great pleasure of sinking the simple putt and not needing the partners to take a putt.
First eagle I've ever had, pity it was in a scramble though!

My shot of the year came in the 2nd round of the club c/ship.
All square playing the 18th and giving my opponent a shot, was middle of the fairway but a long way behind my opponent, had 196yds to a tight back right flag with a strong wind blowing from the right, hit a 5iron to 4 feet,my opponent then missed the green, made a mess of his chip and eventually had to concede the match, best pressure shot ive hit in years.
Hole of the year was the 16th(par5) in the semi-final,2 up playing it but opponent had shots coming at the last 2, hit my best drive of the round to leave the green reachable, hit a 6 iron to 6 feet,it put my opponent under all sorts of pressure as he played his only bad hole of the round and conceded the match before he reached the green:)

    Tullamore 11th hole.

Was not having a good day at the races for the previous 10. I took out the 4 iron due to the domestic I was having with my driver. Knocked my 4 iron maybe 60 yards 😡 (barely made the 10th fairway) so i stood over the ball couldn't see the green from over the ridge took out my 5 wood and stuck it to 6 inches for a stress free birdie 😀

My hole and shot of the year:

Kilcock Golf Club - September Medal.

Am playing off 15 and was 14 over through 14 so struggling along.

Long Par 4 15th Index 2 over water to the green.

Decent drive to exactly beside the 150m to the front which made it about 170-175 yrds to the hole. Slightly downhill and downwind second to a tight front left pin with water both short and left.

Hit a solid 6-iron which sailed straight at the flag, first bounce into an upslope to take the sting out of it and from my elevated position looking down at the green watched it slowly roll up to the hole and disappear :D

Made my golfing year and won my category on the day after that.

Only down side is that my playing partner didn't see it as the wind picked up and he wanted to hit with a good breeze behind to clear the water!!!

didn't really have much to shout about here this year but that changed today. played tralee for the first time.was out on my own when i came up behind a four on the 15th, they had teed off and then they let me play through.180 yards into a gale..........hit my driver on the button slighty to the left of the green, kicked right and edged right over beside the pin.tap in birdie and all in front of an audience. was happy enough to get a decent connection never mind a birdie, tough day, beautiful course and scenery.sign in locker room saying membership is opening up for a limited period. 8 grand entrance fee  if only i had that loose change. what a course!

    we'll go with hole first.

This is long, so I hope you will forgive me :)

It was the qualifying round for the Junior Cup::

The Connacht branch of the GUI in their infinite wisdom insist that people start late in the qualifying round of the Junior Cup. Athlone were out in the last group. I was in the last group and I was due to tee off at 4:30, I didnt tee off till 5:30. I didnt have a great round of golf until after the 13th hole in Athlone. I was 10 over par for 13, playing off 5 and thought I had basically screwed for our team because I knew one of our other players was having an awful round. But walking off the 13th I was told by the team captain, if I managed to go 1 over for the last 5, we'd qualify as leading qualifiers. I proceeded to par the 14th, birdie 15th, par 16th[index 1] and par 17th...

It was already pitch dark at this stage - it had been that way since the 16th. We had GUI officials keeping an eye on our shots wherever they landed.

We got to the 18th tee and the group in front of us had just teed off. We were told to tee off with them. I hit a good drive, just off the right edge of the fairway, but there was a tree in front of me, so I had to go under it to get onto or near the green.

We were getting ready to hit our second shots into the green and all of a sudden some artificial light appeared around the green and we hadn't a notion what was going on. We hit our shots in and I hit a brilliant shot up and into 15 foot from the hole. I was the only one of the 6 of us to hit the green.

When we got up there we saw what the light was. Every car in the car park had their full lights on and people drove their cars around to the back and to the right hand side of the green and facing inwards, turned their lights on. A surreal experience. the group we played down with had to finish out their round first and then we finished out. I got down in 2 putts and we were leading qualifiers by 2 shots.

I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT EXPERIENCE OF PLAYING IN THE PITCH DARK AND ALL THE CARS AROUND THE 18TH GREEN WITH THE LIGHTS ON TO LIGHT THE GREEN!

Actually, one of the best parts of the hole was as we were approaching the green, the team captain came over to me and told me to keep my head and concentrate on my putt and .........

I interrupted him half way through and told him, I had played the last 4 holes in 1 under par, I was doing just fine on my own and if he didnt f*** off and leave me alone.......

everyone got a great laugh out of it and yep, I sealed the deal ;)

Most memorable experience of the year :D. What a hole.

I have 2 shots of the year if you'll allow me

My first shot of the year came in the same competition as the previous, the qualifier.

Playing the 7th hole a par 5, I hit 2 decent shots to leave myself about 80 yards to the green. There was a huge gallery( 30 people) at the back of the green and staring them down, I hit a fantastic pitch shot into 4 feet. I couldnt help myself with the applause I received, I had to raise my arms aloft and take a small bow. An incredible shot, an incredible feeling.

    The second shot:

I was playing in the matchplay against Brian Mooney from Athenry. A phenomenal player. He used to play off a handicap of 1 and Playing the 9th in Athlone I was 3 down.

It's a short par 5 and He hit a super drive and a 9 IRON into 8 feet. I hit drive 5 iron into the front left bunker. To have any chance in the match, I HAD to get up and down out of the bunker and hit a brilliant bunker shot from where I was into 10 feet and holed the putt.

He then missed his 8 footer and we halved the hole.

It was a great half. I'm not sure if it was the bunker shot or the putt that was my favourite shot, but one of them because after that I pulled him back to level after 15 holes. It was definitely the turning point in our match.

I'm gonna miss the Junior Cup matches this coming year. I went to a handicap of 4 this year and so I'm out of them for next year. It's an unreal competition to be a part of and I've been on the team for many years, so I'm going to miss it :)

I think the gallery adds a lot when you pull off a good shot(albeit only 4 in my case). Its a combination of relief and satisfaction I think.Green light up by car lights sounds unreal. You must have felt like tiger at firestone a few years back, lit up by all the flashing cameras!

    Hole of the year:

A par on the 6th hole in Mount Juliet (thanks to kevin), 3 wood to left side of green, chip across green to 4 foot, drained the par putt.

    Shot of the year:
An 8 iron approach to the 9th in WaterRock, landed a foot from the hole to set up a birdie ( Birdie's are rare in my game).

    Or

The tee shot on the 10th following the birdie above which sailed down the middle to set up a par. No point loosing a ball after a birdie.

My hole of the year for me is the index 1 at navan, hole 6, hit a peach of a drive to just about the 150m marker. I could see the pin was all the way at the back of the green. Making it approximately 170 to the back. Caught the hybrid beautiful pin high about ten feet right of the flag, drained the birdie out.

Shot of the year couple of candidates but my favourite was at one of the par 3s in corballis. We were playing a scramble there and collectively we all made a bags of the hole our best shot was actually one in one of the green side bunkers. Bunker play is my achilles heel but this day I splashed it out beautifully to about 1 foot for a lovely par. We ended up second for the day.

My hole and shot(s) of the year were on 12 in Druids Heath. A crazy hole.
Was playing it two days in a row , so on first day did not know how to play it, so hit a 4 iron to top of hill - the next shot was a slight draw onto the green , was over 200 yards, got the par.

The following day went over corner down to lake a pw and got par.

So a crazy hole , but played it class over two days. I'll never forget the 4 iron onto the green.

My hole of the year has to be my par on the par 5 8th in Waterford Castle.

The hole is about 500 yards from the back tees but after about 250 off the tee it goes pretty downhill so length wise its very reachable. It wouldn't be more much more a drive and a 6 iron down wind. Only problem is at the landing area for driver is a 2 trees/wooded areas 25 yards apart.

That day it was into the wind and I wasn't playing great. Into the wind I should be hitting 3 wood and making it a 3 shoter but I took a gamble to get back on track and carved it into the wood.

Threw down a Gerry Adams and creamed it up the middle..Was still a bit fired up.

Down to the ball and I was about 215 on a downhill lie. Pin back right and I fade my long irons so 3 iron it was. Took off like a missile at the left side of the green and landed about 2 foot on the green and rolled up to about 10 feet short.

I was never going to miss that putt...An eagle nett par I'll call it:pac:

its hard to know exactly what emotions I was feeling on the green. It was just such a surreal experience. Actually another funny thing about the hole, I marked my ball on the green and it took me a minute for my eyes to adjust to the light and find the marker again, lol.

I was really getting worried that I might have to call people over to help me find it ;)

13th hole at Mount Juliet, decent drive down the right hand side and flushed a 4-iron right over the back right flag but a little long into the rough. Fantastic pitch shot straight into the hole, my favourite birdie of 2012!

6th in ballybofey.hit a rescue up the hill which i could hear cattering the pin from where i was. spent 5 mins looking everywhere for my ball til one of my playing partners decided to check the hole and lo and behold...my first eagle.
still mystified as to how the ball ended up in hole after hitting the pin that hard.

Hole of the year occurred on the 01/01/12

Mount Wolseley on the first hole Drive down the middle left me 60 yards out. Pitch checked up 10 feet past the hole. Just about touched the putt and it ran in the middle.
Thought that I was in for a good year all went down hill from there!!

Shot of the year happened in Pierce Purcell

On the 17th holed a putt of about 15 feet. Had to hole it. Went up 18th level and hit a 6 iron pin high 12 feet left of pin from 170 yards. Game over.

    Hole: 18th Kileen Course Killarney

Back in July, Chalkie 501 in his wisdom;) gave a few of us a tour of his home course, I absolutely stunk up the place, I think I may have been too excited going down there! But anyway after a disastrous round of 14pts:eek: thru 17 holes I stood on the beautiful 18th which is Index 3 - 427 yards although think it may have been playing about 400 or so that day, absolutely nailed a drive over the right hand fairway bunkers and in the rough. Caught the sweetest 9-iron and landed about 6/7feet away and rolled in a curling putt for a great birdie, was absolutely delighted walking off the 18th:D

Shot(s): Both in Ballykisteen on Boards Captains Day outing

The first one came on the Index 1 Par 4 11th - 398yards, hit a decent drive to the left rough but still had approx 195 yards left to the green which had a big lake running all down the right hand side, I though to myself if I can play a hybrid to fade off the left hand bunker and land left edge it would roll towards the pin..........and it happened exactly as I wanted it, it was a class shot!!! Wouldn't you know I 3putted for a bogey:p

The second came on the 18th hole, which was our long drive hole, following my heroics on 11 I hit a great drive on 12 but after that I started the banana shots so stood on the 18th with my driver going for long drives(Freemount09 was jousting me about hitting a banana shot over the trees on the right and I might have a chance of getting it in the fairway). I pretty much guessed that Kiers47 had hit the long drive to that point, I nailed it, delighted, went up to my ball on the fairway and I was about 1 yard past the marker to win my first Boards Prize...............As I always do, I topped my second and the ball hopped back 2 yards :D:D:D Good Times!!!!

Glad to have been present for your hole of the year ssbob:)
you forgot to mention that this was all done in full view of the clubhouse and a fairly full bar;)

Such brilliance and tragedy all at the same time. :)

    Shot: Bray 3rd.
Punched 7 iron 2nd shot from 170 yards on a hanging lie to 4 feet.

    Hole(s): Rathcore 16, 17 & 18
A bit of a cheat, but it kinda sticks in the mind. Had 24 points (society tees) after 15 on a day when I was playing better than I as scoring - to that point.
16 - 139 yard par 3 - 9 iron to 30 feet, chip to 3 feet, knocked it in for par.
17 - 310 yard par 4 - Drove the ball to the front edge of the green - assisted by a stiff breeze and a big kick off the hill you drive over - about 30 feet from the hole. Missed the eagle putt by 3", tap in birdie.
18 - 275 yard drive around the corner, scuttled my 5 iron second shot (about 180 yards) just left of the pond that guards the green, ending up pin high. Chipped to 18", another tap in birdie.
