I don't know, how many miles per gallon do you get?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

    That seems terrible to me!

sign up to fuelly.com and track it that way. You'll be sure then

What power engine is it, is it an auto and is it city driving? Those figures are probably not too far off the mark for city driving.

i thought my Focus 2 litre was poor at 30+mpg!

    I have a 2l Mondeo that's seeing 34.6, mostly motorway tho.
    Your figure seems low.
    Some suggestions:
Two things: 1. reset the realtime consumption by pressing down on the button near the dials, run it for a bit. This will give you a better idea of current consumption.
    2. If it trends down much below 30mpg, then check if it revs at traffic lights; if it does, there's a fault with a breather hose crack that affects the oxygen sensor that makes consumption increase. It's a quick enough fix.
Maybe others will have better suggestions...

Maybe maybe it's using US gallons. It'd still be under 30 mpg uk though..

Track it by using real calculation every time you get petrol.
Use fuelly as suggested or http://www.torquecars.com/tools/uk-mpg-calculator.php

Ya do alot of city driving....its a 1.6 Zetec Petrol...I reset the clock already and it stayed around 30 for awhile but slowly made it back down again...

    Is it automatic?

Trip computers are usually very poor at calculating mpg.
Try filling up, recording your mileage, and note the mileage again when you fill up. Also note the amount of litres it took to fill.

This will give you two figures kms travelled and litres used. You'll be able to calculate your real mpg from that.

Still seems awful from a 1.6, my 2.5 petrol tells me it returns about the same as you (although I know its moat likely a lot less)

They do that in city driving. It's a pretty underpowered engine for the size of the car and hauling the weight up to speed repeatedly in city conditions puts a dampner on economy. It would seem pretty normal, although you should measure it yourself instead of the trip computer (optimistic on Fords) to get a true figure.

Might not be far off, depending on driving style, especially in the city.

    Go LPG
Will not improve consumption(MPG), but a lot cheaper to fill up per liter..LPG fuel station map

i ve thread running on here

You get your car converted to use Liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) .it is a separate fueling system which allows you to use Petrol or LPG,OR both at same time ,depending on your (petrol) car. You still able to use petrol ,it is not a permanent modification ,fully removable ,but why would you do that if you can fuel up for as little as 0.80cent per liter?:)
search Boards for LPG ,a lot of stuff on here:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 556 ✭✭✭Bobo78

Was thinking about that but realistically I m not sure for how long will I keep the car plus I don't do enough mileage in year to justify the cost of the price of conversion. :)

Modern Generation 4(sequential ) systems are rated by engine power output, so You can transfer them to another car of similar horsepower,so say you have 4 cyl 115 bhp passat ,and your next is 120Bhp Honda. as long as its still 4 pot engine ,system will be easily transferable,`cos system for this kind of car will be rated at about 150 bhp max..Any 4 pot up to 150 will be suitable and will cost about 250 to transfer/setup in your new car. With some installers doing systems for as little as 800 euro, average payback is 7-8 months.Simple maths 1 gallon of petrol is an average of 7.65 and a gallon of LPG is 3.80 . 10 gallon tank of petrol is 76.50 (210 miles city driving) or 38 euro for Lpg ..If you fill up once a week (i do ) it only takes 22 weeks for break even ,but for me even if its 28 weeks i am happy enough. The only case i see where this fuel will not be suitable is if one travels on a back seat of a chauffered limo at taxpayers expense.:D

Ok so to follow on this story rang the main dealer and they told me that on the new Mondeo's they supposedly use 4.8 litres per 100km...

told him about my query he told me that there is no way those figures are right(coming from a main dealer) and that he would not trust the odometer and that the only way to tell is to fill the car, then drive it for a further 200km and then refill...

and that this is the only way to really tell how your using your petrol/diesel etc....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 556 ✭✭✭Bobo78

There is no way Mondeo 2008 1.6 petrol would use 4.8l per 100 km.
I find this site accurate when it comes to fuel consumption

I think the Zetec had the 125ps version of the 1.6i engine, so this link shows the official figures.

    http://carfueldata.direct.gov.uk/search-new-or-used-cars.aspx?vid=21938

    Combined of 7.2 is 38mpg.
Urban (COLD) of 10.3 is 27mpg.

I've driven a lot of the 1.6LX models which have the 110ps version and they really need pushing hard to get any sort of performance, especially if there is more than 1 person in the car or a loaded boot.

The fact is that the driver is by far the biggest variable as regards fuel consumption. Not really a lot of point in a person saying that he gets X mpg in SoAndSo car and asking is it right. Three different drivers will get three different figures, quite possibly wildly different.

I've had an 08 mondeo 1.6l for the last week while my car was in the garage, and those figures the op mentioned seem true. I thought my mazda was very thirsty but hell the mondeo is not suited to city driving or country roads.
