Motor Tax without NCT?

    Hi All,

Just a quick question to ask for a friend. Would greatly appreciate it if anyone is able to answer.

My friend car has been off the road for a few months due to no tax and no NCT. My friend is insured. The garda form for the motor tax has been signed in the station yesterday to say car has been off the road. My friend was going to submit this form tomorrow to the motor tax office to tax the car. The form asks for a certificate of roadworthiness. See link:

    https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/pdf/RF100A_en.pdf

However, I am just wondering if the she will be able to tax the car without an NCT Certificate or will she firstly have to get the NCT in order to tax the car?

Bit of a catch 22 I spose... As in, how would she drive the car to get the NCT done if she doesnt have the motor tax?? But then I spose technically she shouldnt be driving the car with no NCT even if it was to the NCT building???

    Any advise appreciated.

This field on the form for certificate of roadworthiness only applies to vehicles which are meant to do DOE instad of NCT (f.e. goods vehicles, buses, etc).

There is nothing stopping you from taxing not-NCTed car.

If you look at C3 Section 3:
C3 Section 3 - A Certificate of roadworthiness (CRW) is required for:
    • Goods Vehicles, Trailers, Buses or Ambulances over one year old must be tested every year.
    • Design Gross Vehicle Weight (DGVW) is the basis for determining vehicle classification for vehicle testing purposes.
    • Goods Vehicles having (DGVW) of 3,500kg or lower to be tested as a Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) - CRW fee g6.
    • Goods Vehicles having (DGVW) exceeding 3,500kg to be tested as a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HV) - CRW fee g13
If you do not have a current CRW, you must include a Pass Statement issued by an Authorised Tester, together with the appropriate fee with this
application and a CRW will be issued to you.
Basically you only need to produce a CRW if you are taxing a commercial/goods vehicle that needs to be DOE'd. Should be no problem taxing a car without NCT. I did it years ago and i don't think anything has changed since.

Great news! Thanks all for such speedy replies! My friend will be delighted. She was quite worried about it :).

    That actually made me thinking.

What in case someone is not using his vehicle, but need to keep it parked on public road.
For every vehicle parked on public road motor-tax is required.
    But NCT or DOE isn't.

So how is someone meant to tax the car without DOE if he just want's to have this tax to have his commercial vehicle parked on public road?

You got me thinking too! I had a read of this.
The DOE test is required every year and without a pass certificate the vehicle cannot be taxed or used on the road.

I don't know if this includes parking in a public place or not. Its a mind boggler

    Edit: Also found this.
    (f) Commercial Vehicle - Vehicle required DOE – If the vehicle is a commercial vehicle and could not be taxed from the end of the last expired motor tax as the vehicle was awaiting a DOE at the time the Fixed Charge Notice was issued. You are required to provide the original appointment letter from the DOE centre which was issued before the date and time the Fixed Charge Notice was issued. The letter should show the date and time of the DOE test. Please also provide the pass certificate issued by the DOE centre following the DOE test, the new motor tax disc showing the vehicle is taxed forward with receipt for all arrears paid back to the date the vehicle was last taxed.
So basically you have to appeal anytime you get a Fixed Charge Notice. What a pain!!
