Been following this one for awhile, the fact that almost the entire film was shot from a POV perspective is quite interesting and I'm curious to see how it translates. The reviews aren't exactly inspiring but at least Wood is trying something a little outside his comfort zone and if it's have as gory as the original it could be a lot of fun.

It's not bad, sure it's aged a little but there's an undercurrent of sleaze that I doubt the remake will capture. It's best remembered for the rather excellent practical effects work, the shotgun to the face scene being the most well known.

The talented and under-appreciated Buddy Giovinazzo was actually going to shoot a sequel with Joe Spinell but Spinell's death put a stop to it.

Ah jesus christ, is nothing sacred  The whole point of films like Maniac is their grainy grindhouse ethic.

This is how a remake is done, This movie was really intense, the POV shot kind of got a bit boring as the movie went on.

Sure it dose make the movie very creepy at times and this remake also stay very true to Maniac (1980)

Elijah Wood was very believe-able as this Psycho, it was very creepy in this movie. he did a really good job.

I was hoping for gory death in this but that no until the ending scene of the movie, which is very bloody.

Best Horror movie of the year so far and Put Evil Dead remake to shame

    8 out of 10

Excellent, excellent soundtrack. I thought it was a really engaging film and definitely the most interesting horror I've seen in a while. I don't know if I particularly believed Wood as the psychopath, appearance-wise, but then it's shot majoratively in the 1st person so it's not much of an issue.

    God Rest William Lustig.

After this HE'LL be turning in HIS GRAVE.

It's not that it's a BAD FILM... it's just so INDIFFERENT.

Have to say that I really enjoyed this, it's easily one of the best genre pictures in years. Few expect great things from a remake of a nasty, grotty, 80s sleaze picture starring Elijah Wood but against all expectations the film manages to be one of the most impressive horror films in years and a damn fine remake which actually improves upon the original.

The film is a technical achievement that makes great use of POV and there's real dark sense of despair to it all. Wood is fantastic as the haunted and tortured Frank and the violence is visceral and gritty. There's a rawness that impresses and it's refreshing to find a slasher that doesn't trivialize murder or turn it into entertainment. Maniac is not a film to recommend to casual genre fans or those on the lookout for a little light entertainment but genre fans will find a lot to love and those looking for something a little different will be in heaven.

Almost forgot to mention the score by Rob which is one of the coolest and most atmospheric in years. It perfectly captures the sound of so many 80s classic and works fantastically well on it's own.

And just to add, to the posters saying Lustig would be turning in his grave I assume that you are unaware of the fact that he is very much alive and was quite involved in the remake.
