Ladies and gentlemen, Future Classics is go for 2013! Regs are now available for this new series, to be held in Mondello Park over 4 rounds. Each stand alone race caters for cars of the 70's and 80's, split into 4 power, cc and weight divisions up to 2000cc. This makes it ideal for people that want to keep their cars road legal yet still be competitive.
A website will be up in a couple of weeks but in the meantime, regs can be had by sending an email to

Will have a FIAT Uno racer out in this class and will be at meeting. If its cheap motor racing your looking for an fully race prepared Uno can be picked up for between €750 and €1500 usually with heaps of rims, tyres and spares.

Very good first Drivers meeting for the Future Classics class last Tuesday night in the Halfway House, Navan Road. By my estimation 14 cars committed so far: 4 FIAT Uno's, 2 Peugeot 205's, 2 FIAT 128 Coupe's, an Opel Corsa, a Vauxhall Chevette, a VW Golf GTi, a Honda CRX, and a Nissan Micra. Good fun and low cost racing beckons in 2013.
Regulations are on the IMRC website http://www.irishmotorracingclub.com/

The following are the confirmed race dates for Future Classics 2013
    April 13th/14th
    June 8th/9th
    August 24th/25th
    October 13th
All events will be one practice / qualifying and one race.

Well done to Paul and Aido.

Our own FIAT Uno race car rewire was completed yesterday and our €1,000 Race car is ready to go now for the 2013 season in Mondello. If anyone is looking for adjustable shock absorbers or a FIA approved roll cage for an Uno race car this advert on Done Deal may be of interest:

I was talking to Aidan Byrne, Class Co-ordinator of the new Future Classic's Series (087 2566362) this afternoon and he advised of a number of changes to the Future Classic's Series that will encourage further interest to build on the solid numbers already committed to the Series:

    * FIAT Punto 1400cc race cars will be allowed to compete in the series. Punto's will be required to run on an E mark 1.6mm minimum depth threaded tyre, they will not have to put back in their headlights or original glass windows, however, they will need to add weight to avoid breaching the barrier time of 1.09.5. A leading Punto race driver has advised that with the use of a threaded tyre around 50kg will need to be added to a Punto race car weight of 920kg to bring them back to the barrier time.
    * Previous Mondello Park winners are allowed to race in the Series.
    * Rally or race cars fitted with lsd's are allowed to race in the Series but like the Punto's may have to add weight to avoid breaching the barrier time.
    * Headlights are not required but are not totally ruled out for the future. So Uno's, Punto's and Rallycross cars will not need to fit headlights.

This Series is designed to get the very many race prepared cars lying in sheds and barns back out racing. It is the very lowest cost motor racing available in Ireland, for example, there are fully race prepared Uno's on Done Deal and the Series Facebook page for less than €1,000!!!! The Class will have real variety with great mix of marques and models including the aforementioned Uno's and Punto's, other FIAT's such as 128 Coupe, Ritmo and Cinquecento, Mk 1 Golf GTi, Mk 2 Escorts, Chevette, Peugeot 205's, Mini and Corsa's. The Series will be a great addition to Mondello Park in 2013 and will provide great entertainment for drivers and fans alike.

however, they will need to add weight to avoid breaching the barrier time of 1.09.5.
I was reading the rules sheet but what's the idea behind the barrier time?

How likely is it that you could break the barrier with the cars racing?

My understanding is that it is to create really close racing with the huge variance of machines, it your car can do a 1.08 you add some lead weight to bring it back to the barrier time. If it is not capable of reaching the time you can keep tweeking it until you get there. For example, the lap record on the National Circuit in Mondello Park for a FIAT Uno race car is 1.09.71 (set by Michael Barrable) so its unlikely an Uno will require any weight added, however the lap record for a FIAT Punto 1400cc race car is 1.06.471 (set by Barry Travers) on slicks, so even with threaded tyres it will require some weight to bring it back. The Series is all about fun, close racing and low low costs in these recessionary times.

No cheaper way into Motor racing in Ireland and a proper race car that will give its new owner plenty of fun

The first ever Future Classics Race on April 14th in Mondello Park attracted an entry of 10 cars with 9 making it to the grid, a VW Golf GTi, a Chevette, a Mini, an MG Maestro, two Peugeot 205's and three FIAT Uno's. Ian Thornton in his pristine Golf had a comfortable win but the the highlight of the race was a Titantic scrape between Robbie Parks in a 205 and Aidan Byrne in an Uno, borrowed from James Roche, with the dice decided on the line in favour of Robbie who clinched third place.
There has been huge interest in the class since the first race with six cars acquired this week alone mainly Peugeot 205's and FIAT Uno's but also a very interesting Opel. With fully prepared 205's changing hands for just €1500 and fully race prepared Uno's for €1,000 this class is set to grow and grow. The barrier time proved to be no issue at all but the best feature of this Class is the craic and banter in the Paddock both before and after the racing, long may it continue. As a side note the fact that a FIAT Uno raced in the Future Classics makes it 20 consecutive years that an Uno has raced in Mondello Park, has any other Tin Top made such a contribution to Irish Motor Racing?

Good offer from Mondello Park for the car race meeting on August 25th to encourage more Future Classic entries. If more than 12 cars are entered in the Future Classics race there will be two races at an entry fee of €275. With fully race prepared Unos changing hands for around €1,000 and Peugeot 205 Gtis for a little more this is a great opportunity to go racing on a shoestring.
