Advice on upgrading Chainset & Bottom Bracket

I’m hoping someone can give me some pointers/advice.
I have a trek 1.5. It’s a new 2012 frame (it was replaced under warranty recently) and all the components (9-speed Tiagra) are from my original 2010 bike, with the exception of the wheels (Mavic Askiums).
I mainly use it for commuting, but starting to get more distances done now.

I’m looking into upgrading some of the more obvious components and I was thinking of starting with the crank-set and upgrading to a 105 compact double (or something similar)
The current BB on the bike is a square taper (68x113mm) and the crank-set is a compact 50/34.
From what I can work out for me to upgrade I have to go to a more modern BB (like Hollowtech II or GPX) and I’m not sure what works and what doesn’t or what I should be looking at.

Another problem is that all the new crank-sets are 10-speed and I’m on 9-speed. (Although I've read that you can run 10-speed with 9-speed)

Has anyone made a similar upgrade? Was it worth it?
What did you do and how did you find it following the upgrade.

Any and all advice/suggestions are welcome.
