trade in value

So hopefully getting a brand new car in january but not too happy about the trade in on our current car.
I reckon we would get a significant amount more if we sold the car ourselves. The money from selling the car isn't vital to getting the new one but we dont want to have two cars at the one time.

If we put it up for sale now and it sold quickly we would be without a car till january.
Has anybody else been in this predicament and what option do we have re renting a car or borrowing a car short term.
    Thanks

What car are you looking to buy? Also what are you trading in? I have new car ordered. Had to shop around to get any kind of a deal I was happyish with lol.

Concentrate on the cost to change price rather than the trade-in value of the old car. It's easy to give a higher trade-in price if the new car is overpriced to begin with.

    Getting a 320d se
Getting rid of a 07 corsa

The bmw seems to be the same price in a few different dealers with one being €1700 cheaper and the other coming with free leather.

The sales guy said he would do a much better deal on the trade in if we get a 12 reg but this will be my first new car andi'd like to consider it new for 11-12 months as opposed to 4-5 weeks.

All 3 series should come with leather as no cost option if registered in quarter 1 of 2013, so dont let a dealer use that as discount because you will get it wherever you go.

Maybe you could tell us the figures you're being given?

€4500 for the corsa which i feel is very undervalued.

What's the cash discount on the new car?

Sounds about right for a 07 Corsa.

Which garage is offering the smallest cost to change? It doesn't really matter what the trade in value is, because it isn't a true reflection of what the garage will pay. Its a diluted figure mixed with the value of the car and some discount from the new car.

If he took some discount away and increased the trade in value would the deal look more attractive?

    I would sell it privately.

A car at that end of the market will shift pretty easily and leaves you free to go with cash. I would say you are getting next to nothing in reality for it when you consider what you would buy the BMW for with cash.

You probably have your heart set on the 13 plate, but I would listen to what he has to say on a 12 car.

If there is several k of a difference on a pre-owned, I'd be inclined to grab it and head off on a long haul holiday with the difference...

Unless they are giving you the 12 reg for around 5k less than a 13 reg, you'd be better off holding out till Jan I think, that 13 is going be worth at least that and more

I am in a somewhat similar situation. Wanted to change car, but garges offered me very poor trade in price on my car. On the advice of people on boards, I decided to sell it privately.

While it took me the bones of two months, I did get €1500 more selling privately than by trading in. I have to say though, that I currently have the use of a family members car while finding a new one so the issue of not having a car was not one that I had to worry about.

Pretty much set on the 13 plate.

Someone suggested trying to get the sales guy to include a few extras to lesson the sting so I might try that.

I'll put it up for sale in the mean time and hope for the best.

But if it does sell quickly I still have the main problem of no 'get around car'

selling privately on 07 corsa you can save ~1500 euro ?

    go to rentalcars.com

    max hire online is 28 days - let say 1st - to 28th Dec = 4 weeks

you can get ford fiesta or vw polo for 250euro. check if you can use your own insurance to cover rented car.

if you need longer term add ~60 euro per week.

This will save you more than 1k.

Whats the problem with having two cars for a short while? Surely its better than having no car?

Rental prices spike quite a bit over December due to a) holiday demand and b) less cars on fleet due to end of year.

07 corsa's on sale on carzone from E4950. E4500 isnt that bad, you could throw it up on dondeal quickly at say E5950 and see what happens, will only cost E5! would it be cheaper to buy the bm up north Op?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,667 ✭✭✭Frynge

I know i could buy it up north but if anything were to happen with the car or even just to get it serviced it is very handy been able to drop it off on my way to work.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,102 ✭✭✭✭Drummerboy08

New 3 series wouldn't be cheaper up north, second hand might be though.

If it has the manufacturer's warranty or a BMW approved used car warranty and bought from the UK or NI then it still can be serviced or repaired under warranty by a BMW dealer in the Republic as BMW Ireland and BMW UK are under the same company.

My car is a UK import and have had warranty work done here by the local BMW dealer with no issues.
